¿Sabían que el ilusionista Uri Geller fue sometido a pruebas científicas por la CIA para verificar si sus supuestas capacidades mentales eran reales?

En 1973, Geller fue invitado al Instituto de Investigación de Stanford para participar en una serie de experimentos controlados por los físicos Harold Puthoff y Russell Targ. Durante ocho días, se le pidió que reprodujera dibujos realizados por científicos en habitaciones separadas y selladas sin tener contacto visual con ellos. Los resultados de estas pruebas mostraron que Geller logró replicar varios trazos con una precisión que los investigadores calificaron como difícil de explicar por el azar. Estos documentos fueron desclasificados en 2017 y revelaron que la agencia de inteligencia estadounidense mostró un interés genuino en el uso de la percepción extrasensorial para labores de espionaje.

A pesar de estos registros, su carrera estuvo marcada por la confrontación directa con James Randi, un mago y escéptico profesional que se dedicó a demostrar que los trucos de Geller podían realizarse mediante técnicas de prestidigitación. En una famosa aparición en el programa de televisión The Tonight Show en 1973, Randi preparó los materiales de tal forma que Geller no pudo utilizar sus propios utensilios. I read the David Segal NYT article about #UriGeller this weekend, in greater and greater disbelief as I read such simpering credulous rhetoric of an obvious charlatan.
