Shallow-draught vessels such as the scow the Lena Gladys came up the Uretara River to the wharf and landing. Most goods were brought into the Katikati area to this landing by boats of various sizes until the Taneatua branch railway line opened in 1928. Competition from the railway caused the rapid cessation of sea and river transport to Katikati
