Last day/hours for City Nature Challenge!
I'm not attending any scheduled events today. But I'll be bopping by Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1. Perfect weather for a Bee Quest for Habropoda laboriosa, Blueberry Digger Bee.

2/n This screenshot lists all 65 species. Some summary measures and metrics:
* 65 is 30% of the estimated 217 bee species believed to be present in NYC.
* 24 are known from only a single observation.
* 37 have fewer than 5 observations.
* 9 are kleptoparasites, aka brood parasites or cuckoo species.
* 8 are introduced species.cc: @darwin

1/n Giddy to share that - thanks to ardent iNaturalist identifiers - I am now up to 65 - SIXTY-FIVE! - bee species in my garden. This, in the geographic center of Brooklyn, NYC, on less than 2,500 ftΒ² / 232 mΒ² / .057 acres.

So, species 1,800 is a caterpillar (larva) of the Virginia tiger moth, Spilosoma virginica, I found 5 years ago at my sister's old place in the Pine Barrens area of New Jersey.

2/2 And the other, a small moth that looks exactly like a broken-off piece of a twig.
Ipsilon dart, Agrotis ipsilon.

My two most recent new (to me) species were from my own backyard, barely a month ago. (These are my IDs, so subject to correction!)

Star jelly, Nostoc commune. Looks like other jelly fungi, but this erupted from the ground, rather than a tree branch.
