  1. #Winemaking acid powers cleaner way for cobalt-nickel recovery from #BatteryWaste

Scientists use #TartaricAcid and electrowinning to split #cobalt and #nickel from battery waste for cleaner #recycling.

    By Neetika Walter
    Mar 11, 2026

"Scientists have developed a cleaner way to separate cobalt and nickel from lithium-ion battery materials using an electrochemical technique boosted by a naturally occurring acid commonly associated with wine.

    [...]

"The researchers say the approach could be particularly useful for '#UrbanMining,' the process of recovering valuable #minerals from discarded #electronics and spent #batteries. Countries with limited mining resources are increasingly looking to #recycling to secure supplies of critical materials.

" '#Electrowinning’s edge in urban mining gives us a practical pathway to turn battery waste into a valuable resource for cobalt and nickel, while also helping the United States reduce its reliance on foreign supply chains,' Liu says."

  11. Cities are starting to mine their own junk. Little facilities pulling rare earths out of dead electronics instead of shipping the mess overseas. It makes the hidden guts of digital culture visible again. Still small, pilot stuff, mostly civic-funded. Recycling PR? Uh uh. Greenwashing? Nope. It’s early infrastructure for keeping your own material loops local.

  14. Ich habe keine Bewerbung geschrieben. Keinen Termin vereinbart.

Was bremst, sind unsere Rahmenbedingungen.

  15. This weekend we found more nerf darts but they were broken so it was more of a #plogging thing than #urbanmining
To be honest I'm not sure what upsets me more. Leaving broken stuff out in nature or leaving usable stuff 🤔 I guess it's just both a bit upsetting.

  19. Found another vape thrown into the grass 😒 This time is quite a chunky one. Has a USB port for recharging but nothing to load more liquid it seems. Curious whether the charging circuit is separate from the rest of the electronics so I could potentially reuse it 🤔 #urbanmining

  23. Finally giving back the Tesla tomorrow, so I had a last "dirty job" for it this weekend, of getting more wooden pallets for the raised bed build. Couldn't fit in as many as I'd liked but still enough decent wood to get a bit of work done hopefully. Now I just need some decent weather and time...

  28. Today we found 4 nerf darts, one of which had seen some car tires and went into the proper trash, but we got 3 working ones.

I don't feel like calling this #urbanmining because that seems like an active thing which this is clearly not. #urbanforaging would feel right but seems to be focused on food only. Is there a decent term for it?
