#BangorME - Limited space can’t stop Bangor’s #UrbanGardeners from growing their own food
Avatar photo by Elizabeth Walztoni July 29, 2025
"Bangor may not seem like a place to grow a '#FoodParadise,'but Travis Gagnon’s experience proves otherwise.
"He’s interested in #SelfSufficiency, and limited space at his apartment hasn’t stopped him from raising an explosion of crops along the walkway to his ground floor apartment, from #watermelons to #wheat. Gagnon isn’t alone; many people in Bangor and #BrewerME are producing food and supporting #pollinators in small spaces.
"Though city growing presents some unique obstacles — such as soil that may be poor, limited light and small yards — Bangor-area growers are overcoming them and even finding things they prefer about growing in an urban environment.
"Twelve such gardeners are opening their yards to the public and will be on hand to answer questions on Saturday, Aug. 2 for an annual urban garden tour organized by #FoodAndMedicine, a Brewer-based organization working to address the root causes of poverty."The tour aims to show how anyone can start growing their own food no matter where they live, according to organizers.
"The Bangor Daily News asked participating gardeners how they grow in the city, what they’ve learned and what they enjoy."

Questions for the #gardenersofmastodon especially #urbangardeners. I am growing lacinato kale for the first time this year because I love it. The bed I had planned to put it in is quite shaded, and I since learned that it likes sun- but the sunny bed is FULL of snails. so many snails. They just eat my borage which I don’t mind, but I would probably mind them eating my kale. Shade or snails? Snails or shade? My son is devoted to the snails they have to stay.

Last night unknown #urbangardeners installed a flowering #NoIAA logo in front of the #Friedensengel landmark in #Munich. While the city is reserving a lot of space and infrastructure for the #automobile #industry's flagship exhibition, supporting their #greenwashing campaigns, #environmental, #civic and #climate organisations didn't receive equal support to demonstrate ways towards a #humane and #climatefriendly #city.
