Londoners are discovering the landscaping is edible. Nettles, mushrooms, pine needles: grocery inflation has apparently turned the park into a badly managed pantry. Conservationists are already warning about overharvesting, which is how you know a hobby has become infrastructure. The interesting part isn’t cheaper dinner. It’s remembering the city contains things no app needs to explain. Me? I'm looking for pigweed in my neighborhood. You?

Wild sour cherry pie
- Simple flour butter crumble topping
- Oat and applesauce crust (not visible)
The sour cherries and crabapples were picked from trees within our general area (crabapples were from last year)
Half foraged, half store bought, homemade pie :)
Taste is... OK. Mildly tart/bitter despite addition of sugars, but the crust is the real winner here.

A tree top overburdened with #quinces fell onto my sister-in-laws fence, so I spent a few hours this morning rendering it into its component parts.

Yesterday, I found myself credulously reading the #GoogleAI search summary about how many gingko nuts you can eat before their neurotoxin will poison you, until I suddenly realized what I was doing and exclaimed "oh no".

A #ThrowbackThursday to 2023 when our #HoneyLocust tree was cranking out tons of these pods. I only learned after it fell down in the ice storm that its seeds are an edible legume. The baby groots are already 20 feet tall, so maybe they will create some pods next summer to try.

I went for a little walk, yes today of all days... I call this a handsome payoff. #urbanforaging
Also, lovely scarlet tiger sighting. -

Picked over 5 pounds of cherries from my next door neighbor.
Every other year we are late and have to wait for the second bloom in the other half of the summer, but glad this got done!

This reminds me, I saw two more of these lamps in the ditch the other day. Might need to do another #urbanforaging bike tour tomorrow night 🤔

I found out there's free food in my backyard. The wild onions (crow garlic? Onion grass?) are way bigger in my backyard than the ones in my side yard.
The first time I tried them was in some homemade chimichangas. They're potent and a little goes a long way, but it tasted good. These went into a hodgepodge ramen for lunch.

Apparently, the most populous weed in my backyard this year is a brassica?! I don't even remember seeing these previous years and now they are everywhere, and they have a delicious mild mustard taste.

Hey #Narrm #Melbourne folks. It's autumn, and a lot of yucca is starting to bloom.
What you might not know is that the flowers are edible, and honestly pretty good. You can eat them raw, but they are *much* better cooked.

Today we found 4 nerf darts, one of which had seen some car tires and went into the proper trash, but we got 3 working ones.
I don't feel like calling this #urbanmining because that seems like an active thing which this is clearly not. #urbanforaging would feel right but seems to be focused on food only. Is there a decent term for it?

I might be a bit too tired to do a full write-up, but there's a tonne of basket grass (Lomandra longifolia) in seed right now.
I collected a number of seedpods, threshed and winnowed them, soaked and boiled the seeds, and added them to porridge. They were very inoffensive, and could be eaten on their own, but needed lots of boiling to soften.
Apparently they can also be milled and made into bush bread, but I don't have good milling tools, so porridge it was.
This is a plant you see everywhere in urban Australia, as it's a very hardy and low-maintenance native. It's also widespread in the bush.

Do not trust #ChatGPT and #LLMs with identifying plants. They can double down on declaring something non-poisonous even when completely wrong.
