I thought that the collision of these two #Climate related stories in my news feed was interesting:

Both are great news. Story 1 examines the potential for #local #food growth in and around #Bristol.
This is something that I'm passionate about - you could take the #ClimateChange stance, or the local #resiliency stance, or the supporting people to re-engage with the #Earth stance. It also aligns nicely with #Schumacher's 'Small Is Beautiful' philosophy.Story 2 is about a new #Solar farm being approved on the outskirts of Bristol.
Again - big YES. Give me that free energy that's been falling on our heads since the dawn of recorded time!
What interested me is the collision in between land uses.
In story 1, we hear that #Bristol has the potential to oversupply the #fruit and #vegetable needs of its population if "all of its green space was used for urban growing". This includes currently unused tracts of land beside the motorway, not just urban snippets and disused corners.
Story 2 naturally needs space. Solar farms need to go on the land.
So is there a tension between the needs for human power (food) and the need for technological power (solar = energy = phone chargers, heart monitors, oxygen pumps etc)?
Is there a balance between the two, and what choices need to be made?
This might not be "A Thing", but it sparked my interest & I'd love to hear from folks in the know!

I'm a deep believer in creating small, self-sufficient and sustaining communities, especially where #food is concerned.
(Small is Beautiful by E F Schumacher is a #MustRead #bookThis leadership from #NewYorkCity is something to be admired.
Giving the local #community more #ownership and #sovereignty over the means of #production has so many fabulous benefits:
- Benefits #ClimateAction / #ClimateChange by reducing #FoodMiles
- Benefits local #people by reconnecting them with the food on their plates
- Supports the #Local #Economy by keeping wealth & spending in the local area for the benefit of local #business#Bristol (where I live now) is a city of #UrbanFarms and #allotments. It's staggering, actually, how much production capacity there is here. And I'm proud of it.
However, we must also be attentive to the #equality and #equity issues. #LocalSourcing can come with a price premium (local carrots here can cost 4x supermarket versions from the other side of #Europe).
Local production must come with local affordability too. That's a redline for me...Finally, this level of #system change must be, surely, a great example of #SocialMarketing / #SocMar in action!

Their seeds are grown and harvested by co-operating farms. They have videos on the YouTube as well.

In #Singapore currently 90% of all food products domestically consumed are imported. Land and space are rare commodities. As such #agriculture as industry is also not commonplace w/in the nation-state...until now. A new social initiative that has rooftop building spaces being repurposed into #urbanfarms is receiving a positive reception. 'Simple' innovative, and creative idea(s) such as this is one way to promote #sustainability in line w/#SDGs. #chemicalfreefarming
