  1. a few years ago i drove up to the NWT to visit some family, and i made a side-trip to Pine Point.

i hadn't seen it for over 30 years - the very last time i had seen it, the entire town was being hauled away by semi trucks carrying bungalows on trailers.

when we arrived, i couldn't recognize any of it. what had been hundreds of concrete foundations and asphalt had been replaced entirely by millions of poplar trees and wild grasses. i could barely make out the pavement beneath it as new saplings erupted through it and turned the road into rubble.

eventually i stumbled upon the foundation of the pine point hotel - it had been completely backfilled to prevent people from exploring it. but one area - near the employee bathrooms as it turned out - had collapsed, and opened a hole to the surface.

i turned on my camera and crawled inside the hole.

i've never shown anyone this video. i'm not sure why. it felt disrespectful i guess - like a kind of voyeurism. but today - four years to the day i recorded it - i realized that no one else might ever get to see the pine point hotel basement.

so here are a few minutes of my exploration, completely silent aside from the sounds of my feet. forgive me for not providing a strong play-by-play in the alt description, but i'm still baffled by the many broken things i saw in there. maybe you'll have better eyes for it.

edit: if your instance can't load the video (some have file size limits) - you can view it directly here:
