  1. #WorldwideDead is a black box clone of the now deceased game #UrbanDead.

A one person effort by Marcel Swann to bring back the game, and nearly a year in development. The effort is known to the original creator, Kevan, who has not responded negatively to it.

I played the Beta and I am now in the recently soft launched main game. Still a work in progress, but it's already implemented the bulk of the original game play.

It will hopefully manage to avoid the problems that lead to the closedown by keeping the community tightknit, ready to stamp down on the multi-account Zerging and offensive behaviour that plagued the unmoderated UD.

My main concern is it will not get a sufficient number of players to make the game play interesting. It has just past 350 characters, which is far short of the 3600 regulars in 2024.
It also requires a Discord login to access the game; many people will see this as a negative given recent goings on at Discord, but the designer is looking at alternatives.

  2. A year ago today, a 19 year old called #UrbanDead was brutally slain by an Act of Parliament.
Buried 6ft under in Red Tape and Legalese, the powers that be thought it was gone for good.

They clearly didn't understand the genre...

  3. I used to play #UrbanDead a lot back in the late 2000s, powered by #Opera when it still ran on the Presto engine.

It's kinda sad to see it go (thanks to UK laws 🫤), but I had a lot of fun moments with it.

  4. Mrh?

Bah-bah #UrbanDead - it was a fun 20 years, but now we are all of us zombies.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to this iconic piece of gaming history, and to some degree, another nail in the coffin of the WWW pre "Web 2.0" some of us were a part of.

  6. It's the end of an era... Urban Dead, the Zombie Apocalypse Browser game is shutting down.

It was always going to happen someday, but for it to occur just short of its 20th anniversary is a bit cruel.

Looks like Kevan, the owner, is unwilling to take the risk, or do the extra work that the new UK legislation puts on them.

  7. I used to play a lot of Persistent Browser Games. They are now considered a bit old hat and past their heyday, but there's still plenty of them around according to pbbg.com/.

Some of them have been going for a couple of decades, mostly with a dwindling but still active player base. I still dabble in the zombie apocalypse game #UrbanDead.

Others that I have left behind include...
    #Battrick #NationStates #eRepublik #Travian #Die2Nite #Popmundo #DolphinSim #BlackoutRugby

I might do individual retrospectives of them, but normal reasons for quitting include...
    - Excessive time spent number crunching
    - Plateauing of in-game progression
    - Pay to win
    - Toxic player base
    - Repetitive game play
    - Site closing down

  8. I shambled to a safer neighbourhood in #UrbanDead and got revived. Nearly died to my infection again, but managed to find a powered hospital. Continued south to my old haunt, Tarasius in Spicer Hills. No sign of my old group from years ago, but I spraypainted a reference to them and I might as well stick around the area for a while.
