"The voracious pine beetle’s renewed assault on Colorado forests expanded rapidly in 2025, chewing through nearly 150% more Front Range ponderosa pine than the year before, according to a new state forester’s report.
"The state’s urban canopy is also being nibbled to death — by the emerald ash borer. The ambitious invader showed up in six new cities in 2025 after years of warnings from local arborists about the spreading threat."

Stanley Park Preservation Society launches lawsuit, alleging negligence, against City of #Vancouver
Four advocates from the #StanleyPark Preservation Society say the park board's plan is not backed up by science and was pushed through without appropriate consultation.
"The defoliated hemlock trees, if and when they die, are not a fire risk because they're just decomposed, wet, spongy matter."

Interesting idea here in the minutes from former Commissioner Lahendro about a "Landscape Fund" that allows for trees to be removed as needed but provides funds for their care and replacement. I'm not clear if that is legal in Virginia (betting no) but I like the general concept #trees #urbancanopy #climate

#Seattle #ClimateActivists roost in old #cedar tree to prevent it from being cut down for new housing
AP, July 21, 2023 5:30 pm
SEATTLE — "With ropes, a harness, a hammock and a bucket pulley system, masked activists in Seattle have taken residence in the branches of an old, thick cedar tree to prevent it from being cut down to make way for new homes.
"The protest on a private lot is the latest episode highlighting tensions behind tree policy in Seattle as #ClimateChange increases temperatures and #UrbanCanopy decreases.
"The Western red cedar, dubbed 'Luma,' is about 80 feet (24.4 meters) tall, with two trunks that are each about 4 feet (1.2 meters) in diameter.
"Its age is not known, but activists have estimated it could be as much as 200 years old. The #Snoqualmie Indian Tribe is seeking to have the tree preserved for its archaeological significance, saying that #NativeAmericans shaped its branches generations ago to distinguish it as a trail marker."

The tree sits at the property line. Likely the developers could route around it.

I recently found out that in some councils around Sydney, residents can request a street tree for their nature strip.
Some of the councils that mention a request process on their website include:
* Campbelltown City Council
* City of Parramatta
* City of Ryde
* The Hills Shire Council
* Randwick City Council

CW: Boulevard tree
Yesterday I did errands for about 90 mins and when I got home, the City had come by and planted a sapling on our boulevard—the strip of grass between the city’s sidewalk and the street. The tag on the tree says Ostrya Virginiana… and I’m like, Hey, at least it isn’t an oak tree! (apparently it’s part of the birch family) #trees #UrbanCanopy

A little news clip about one of the volunteer programs I participate in! (I’m not in this video, but I did help plant at this event.)
#TreeNewMexico plants 100 trees in Albuquerque neighborhoods eight times per year as part of the city’s goal to plant 100k new trees by 2030.

I am lucky enough to live in a part of the country with amazing gardens, both private and public. Though there is a lot of variation across the region depending on the socioeconomic status of suburbs and council priorities.
I do wonder if it would be possible to increase the biodiversity of birds, insects and animals in urban and semi-urban areas if we planted a much wider range of native species. including trees, shrubs, flowers and ground covers. I often get frustrated going into mainstream nurseries and seeing the same plants, no matter where we are. It would be fabulous if councils could spend more time and effort planning and caring for a more diverse urban canopy. A much wider selection of flowering native shrubs and bushes creates more habitat options for native insects, birds and other critters. Increased habitat options mean increased resilience.

Here is a watercolour sketch of a cute little Western pygmy possum. I would love to live in urban areas where we had an increased chance of seeing wild animals.
