  1. Found an antique piece at a thrift store today. A milk glass souvenir bottle from the 1939 World's Fair in New York.

It glows under UV, so it is some sort of Uranium or similar glassware.

Just a neat bit of history. Per my research online it was a vinegar bottle.

  2. I got lucky at the antique mall this afternoon. Someone marked this as standard jadite and though it is jadite, this is pre WW2 depression jadite colored with uranium dioxide. This is a Jennette 2-cup measuring cup manufactured between 1932-39 and is from the sunflowers line. I picked it up for $25 which thrilled me because the last mint condition one I saw was $85, but they knew what they had.

  3. I picked up this Fenton custard glass ruffled basket after voting today. A lady in my town had it, from her mom's curio cabinet, I paid $30. She had a lot of interesting pieces but I'm only looking for a piece of custard and vaseline glass to round out my shelf. The basket is in mint condition and the hand painted flowers are perfect, she took good care of it. It makes a neat living room display.

I have to go pick up Ellie. Have a good night!

  4. I found this uranium vase in the basement today. It's in mint condition besides the hand painted flowers being slightly worn. I'm about out of boxes so this might be it for my personal collection. My grandma had some interesting pieces.

  5. Instead of putting grandma's glassware back in boxes in the basement, I've decided to display the pieces I found. So this evening I cleaned out a space and mounted a light. The cadmium glass doesn't pop as much with the blacklight as a UV, but the uranium glass does. Can't win them all.

I'm displaying all my antique glassware not just the uranium. It brings back memories.

  6. I found some uranium glass in one box but not the decanter and glasses. Maybe I didn't grab it and I remembered wrong. I've got a few more boxes to go through.

This is a sherbet dish and ringed glass, both from the Hocking Glass Company mid 1920s-30s. Grandma probably had sets and these are what's left.

Sorry they're on the toilet lid. It's the only dark room I currently have.

  7. Yesterday I went to an estate sale and was fortunate enough to encounter some SPICY GLASS. This was my first time actually seeing uranium glass (or having my geiger counter pop off at something) so I was very excited. Background here was about .08 microsievert. Spicy glass!!!!! I was tempted, but did not bring it home.

I know that radioactivity itself doesn't actually glow in the visible spectrum. However, I understand the common misconception that radioactivity is depicted as glowing green. This is most likely derived from the distinctive yellowish-green color of uranium glass, which does have a green glow under UV light.

Uranium glass was quite fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s, with its unique and eye-catching fluorescent appearance. So when uranium and other radioactive materials were being depicted in popular media and illustrations in the 1940s and 1950s, the only commonly known visual association with uranium was this glowing green glass.

This is probably why the trope of radioactive materials or environments being portrayed as an eerie, glowing green color became so ingrained in the public imagination. The real-world visual cue of uranium glass likely influenced and reinforced this misconception, even though true radioactivity is invisible to the naked eye.

  15. @psetnik @kimlockhartga There are so many different glass colorings and treatments - it’s a whole world in itself. If you’re keen on seeing more uranium glass, if you use instagram you can do a #uraniumGlass hashtag search - there are some stunning collections!

  16. My friend said they need to check their mailbox tomorrow, so I don't know if their thing arrived yet, but I'll share what I got. #UraniumGlass kitty necklace (and bonus earrings!) Look at the glow on these babies! <3 I am so stupid excited to have these things. One of my hopes for a future tattoo—if I can work out covid logistics/comfort and find out if glow in the dark tattoo ink actually is safe (I see mixed information and am not sure how to better research)—is I want a glowing kitty tattoo, like the ones they've talked about breeding to live around nuclear waste sites to glow in the presence of the radiation as a warning to future generations.
