A new type of #fediverse server called μpub has already come a long way in a very short time. μpub just released version 0.5.0 and it's really shaping up! They have some killer features like "on-demand thread fetching", "granular activity privacy" and "public likes as curated timelines"

version 0.5.0 of μpub frontend and backend are out!

• allow compressing replies in thread view
• show likes tab on object, which lists like and react activities for this object
• add fetch button under actors: will fetch the first page of their outbox
• add a manual "load more" button
• add option to disable auto loading content
• improved timelines caching: should now remember position more reliably when going back to previous view

this is a big change and a lot of it is internal! the project got moved around a bit and the way it's built changes but it finally is a single binary for the whole thing!

• frontend is build with trunk and included in the binary itself, finally deploy upub as a single executable!
• better instance config defaults, so dev envs can be spun up without even changing the config file
• fix migrations for sqlite: oops they were broken!
• auto run migration when starting in monolith mode
• can now run the frontend locally but pulling from a different instance (for example, dev.upub.social to develop only the frontend locally without spinning a whole instance)
• bumped leptos to 0.7

this was a lot of work! some features still need to happen before μpub can be a truly valid option for deployments, but we're getting really close!

i think i want to make #upub compatible with #bluesky . my idea is to make it a PDS: to my understanding, bluesky aggregator will then crawl it and ingest posts for the firehose. ideally only broadcast-level posts would be sent over to bsky, to benefit from their very big :tm: feed. not sure how replies coming from bluesky could work tho

#upub is a new ActivityPub project, aiming to provide a small, unopinionated and performant activitypub server

while it mainly targets small instances and selfhosters, its modular design makes larger deployments viable too

μpub boasts known features such as quote posts, media proxy and AP explorer, but also experiments with on-demand thread fetching, granular activity privacy and actor liked feeds

there are still some important features missing, such as UI for editing/unliking/unfollowing, media uploads, lists and moderation features. they are being worked on!

while not complete, μpub is definitely usable and being actively developed! if you want to stay updated feel free to follow this account or join the dev room on matrix!
