The cheery numbers the @forestservice has been selling for durable wood products never did add up. The figure still underestimates the release of #carbon by #logging. For example what about the helicopter fuel when they do helicopter #clearcuts like in the #UpperCheatRiver #WV

Thanks to the article linked by @AnthonyPWalker at https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac8694 we see that the Central #Appalachians are a hotspot of above-ground #carbon storage worldwide. Why is the @forestservice attacking our #ClimateForests with projects like the #UpperCheatRiver #clearcuts?

The Forest Service is close to a decision on the #UpperCheatRiver Project of the #Monongahela #NationalForest to #clearcut 3,500 acres of our oldest trees on steep slopes to create "Early Successional" habitat. The cut includes oaks and sugar maples more than 200 years old.

@bsmall2 I may be duplicating posts but the book about moss is so wonderful I will take that risk. #BraidingSweetgrass is a great book but my favorite by #RobingWallKimmerer is #GatheringMoss partly because it speaks about #OldGrowth and old stable ecosystems in general. Currently trying to save 3,500 acres of #OldGrowth in the #UpperCheatRiver project that has lots of moss but not a lot of sweetgrass :)
