  1. I spent two hours chatting with a friend, strategizing a way to make a removable papasan cover that is also tufted. She suggested grommets with a button connected to a toggle that slips through the grommet to fasten.

Also thinking about replacing polyfill with sofa foam which I can get locally and have them cut into circles.

    Suggestions welcome.

  2. So, I happened to tune into a local commercial radio station to hear the weather report, and there was an ad by some group talking about how #Maine Governor #JanetMills was taking away everyone's morning coffee! Of course, that was republican scaremongering, since the ban is on #CoffeeMakers that have #PFAS and other #Foreverchemicals as part of their parts and/or seals. Simple solution to that. BUY A STOVETOP COFFEE POT! That's what I grew up drinking, and that's what I use now. I wouldn't use an aluminum one, but the stainless steel ones aren't expensive, and if cleaned properly, produce great tasting coffee for YEARS!

Maine bans thousands of products containing toxic '#ForeverChemicals'

    by Brad Rogers, WGME
    Tue, December 30, 2025

Excerpt: "The new ban includes children's #toys, #cosmetics, #cookware, and #cleaning products [and some electric coffeemakers].

"It also includes reusable water bottles, #upholstery, #clothing, and feminine products.

" 'This is an important step in moving forward with eliminating unnecessary uses of intentionally added PFAS, to protect the public from exposure, as well as the environment,' said Kerri Farris, with the #MaineDEP #SaferChemicalsProgram."

  3. Since I don't often work on leather upholstery I want to get an idea of what people expect to pay for repair of leather furniture. Please let me know what you would expect to pay for repair of the damage in the following post mastoart.social/@DevlinLeather

  4. Took all evening but finished off my patio chair cushions! Last one only took about 40 minutes. I have more chairs back here than we ever get people, though. 🤔 #upholstery #sewing

  5. Sewing lesson so far on the box cushions. Turns out sewing the zipped on the back first (in the seam allowance) and then flipping it over and top stitching works the best. Uses a lot of thread and requires two additional sewing operations, but the result is fsr neater. #cushions #upholstery #sewing

  10. Thanks for the turkey-slicing/upholstery foam saw mom 🤪 (this worked a lot better this time than last time, the scissors on the first cushion was subpar).

(I don't think my mom was thinking about upholstery usage when she gave this to me eons ago). #upholstery #sewing

  11. Project completion day. First new dining chair pad, now with foam (which took 3 weeks to arrive). Also making back pads. First pad looks okay so will sew the 7 others. #sewing #upholstery #furniture #diy

  12. Almost forgot how much of a PITA thick upholstery thread is with tension. #sewing #upholstery

  13. A small but satisfying repair from Tog Hackerspace today 🪑

One of our members reupholstered this chair – new padding, new cover, same sturdy frame. Instead of becoming waste, it’s now good for years more use.

Makerspaces aren’t just 3D printers and blinking LEDs. They also shared skills, hands-on learning, and keeping perfectly fixable things in use.

  14. Just finished some #upholstery. Replaced saggy webbing, fabric. The hardest part was getting the corners smooth enough for the seat to fit back in to the base.

  15. #RepairCafe starts #TechAmnesty to support #community

by Alexandra Bassingham, June 24, 2025

"A community project, which encourages people to bring in items to be fixed for free, has opened an amnesty point for unused #technology to be handed in and repurposed for others.

"The Repair Café, started by Biddy Hammond from Somerset, has helped hundreds of people since being set up in October 2023.

"It has two donation drop-ins a month, one in #BurnhamOnSea and the other in nearby #Highbridge. Items can also be donated at the information bureau on Burnham seafront.

"They now have almost 20 #volunteers, fixing items including #SoftToys, #upholstery, #electricals, and #clocks, which in turn, reduces items sent to #landfill sites.

"Ms Hammond said they are looking for an offer of a storage facility space so they can support the community even more

"Ms Hammond said it was after hearing a woman at a charity shop saying she could not afford to fix her iron, that she came up with the idea of opening a repair café.

" 'I thought it's such a simple thing to do to help people out and it's pointless buying a new whatever every five minutes, because items work for such a short while nowadays.'

"Repair Cafe volunteers also visit homes with a thermal imaging camera, to help people increase insulation with 'simple fixes in their homes like thicker curtains,' Ms Hammond added.

"She said after lockdown the repair cafe has built the community in quite a strong way, offering a service and a social space.

"Hugh Champion, one of the repair team, said: 'We have a good time, hopefully delight a few customers, and send them home with things they had written off that are back to working condition again.

" 'And people are so delighted when you help them fix something especially when it has high sentimental value,' he added."

  16. #Upholstery

I'm posting this so you can see how you would use the old foam and covering as a pattern for your re-upholstery.

As long as you take it apart gently enough, you can use the old forms and fabrics as the pattern for the replacement.

Measure the pieces. Feel free to write on them left/right front/back. Arrows for this side up.

Look at all the pieces. Do you have this stuff?

    Inner plywood shell(?)
    foam
    foam covering
    leather
    welting
    tufting buttons
    maybe zippers?

The fabric that come off is you pattern.

If you have calipers that would help to measure the foam
    Thickness
    width
    depth
    curves

  17. Our first go at doing some basic upholstery. Dining room chairs have had all new foam and the old acrylic fabric replaced with a lovely Harris tweed. Now much more comfy! Tweed from Carloway Mill, supplied locally by the Wool and Needlecraft Centre of Oban, foam from Advanced Upholstery Services.

  21. Promising, however, we need to halt manufacture of #PFAS, and figure out ways to get existing contamination out of the environment (good luck with that) -- since it is pretty much EVERYWHERE!

Pollution cleanup method destroys toxic “forever chemicals”

    By David Danelski, December, 2022

Breakthrough process was developed by UCR scientists for drinking water treatment and toxic site remediation

"Examples of PFAS-containing products include grease-resistant paper wrappers and containers such as microwave #popcorn bags, #pizza boxes, and #candy wrappers; stain and water repellents used on #carpets, #upholstery, #clothing, and other fabrics; #cleaning products; non-stick #cookware; and #paints, #varnishes, and #sealants, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA."
