With all the recent rain #UpfieldBikePath has water over it in a few places here in Fawkner. But to compensate the frog symphony comes out after the rain and persists until it dries out.

A short tour to a cafe for a latte for dad this arvo, avoided some rain, then riding home in sunshine on the #UpfieldBikepath. We’ve had dinner, watched #SBSCycling, closed our eyes and done our #FRATL calculations for stage 2 of 1.15am @Sophoife

Yes, the Brunswick level Crossing Removal of 8 crossings and building skyrail will necessitate closing the rail lane for a time and the #UpfieldBikePath through Brunswick.The finish timeline has been pushed out from 2027 to at least 2030. Residents want to see accessible tram stops and protected bike lanes (as a detour) on Sydney Road before construction starts.

What we do for citizen science! A little after midday Dad stopped to take some quick ambient and spot temperature measurements along the new #UpfieldBikePath as it passes Merlynston station:
🔥Rail ballast was 51-52.6C
🚗Asphalt parking lot was 50-51.2C
🌡️White Concrete path: 42.6C
🌡️Ambient temperatures above shared use path: 37-39.4C.

In comparison the path north of Boundary Road ambient temperatures were at least 2C cooler with the cemetery and 🌳trees on the west side but the path still in full sun.

The good people at #CAMerribek advocated to LXRP who did the car park redevelopment to use best practice design and incorporate shading of the shared use path (optimally via trees) They were ignored. 😡

This is a Failure to build for #heatWave and #climate of the future, that is increasingly here now. 🐶🐶

It’s impossible to hide behind these endangered Matted Flax Lillies, Dad. Although good that LXRP have planted lots of them beside the #UpfieldBikePath under Coburg Skyrail. We even saw a bee, we hope it was a blue banded bee engaging in buzz pollination.

Loquats on the #UpfieldBikePath . The Upfield Urban Forest is also a food forest. Dad stopped and ate some mulberries going south, then stopped and picked some Loquats while going north today. Figs are ripening too.

We feel so sorry people didn’t find the ❤️ for an 🇦🇺Australian First Nation advisory committee on matters that affect them.

In consolation, on Sunday we attended an #UpfieldUrbanForest ride along the #UpfieldBikePath and met ordinary people caring for country and community in tree plantings, weeding and mulching.

Summer has arrived!! We went for a cycle along #UpfieldBikePath at Merlynston. Temperatures at 12.45pm were 34.6C. Near Sydney Rd ambient air temps were 30C-32C. State Government failed to incorporate canopy shade as suggested by local humans when car park upgrade was done. Pure negligence as we face increased #urbanheat and extreme #heatwave temperatures.

We’d like to say a thank you and RESPECT to both drivers (one from each direction) who stopped at the raised crossing of the #UpfieldBikepath at O’Hea street at 5.30pm today for us on our bike. It isn’t a formal Wombat Crossing (but maybe it should be) .

Cars, trucks and buses queueing across the pedestrian/cycling lights on Bell street at Coburg station scare us!!! But also the cars that run this red light only to go 20 metres and have to stop behind traffic at the next lights.!! So much disregard for vulnerable road users.

Perfect spot on the #UpfieldBikePath and Union Street in #Brunswick. Staff were friendly, so we gave them a lick not a bite. We might come back here! “

We also surfed the #UpfieldWave following the train here. Cyclists need to have priority when they upgrade the Bike path as part of Level Crossing Removal.

Just attending Merri-bek Council meeting in the Public gallery. I asked 2 questions during public question time:
1. In Regional Trails Strategy what was Council doing co-ordinating work with Hume Council on Craigieburn path, #UpfieldBikePath, and #MerriCreekTrail given regional priority.
2. Asked about impact on Box Forest shared Use path of a possible right hand slip lane turn into Northern Memorial Cemetery, and impact on pedestrians crossing to the Shared Use Path.

“At last the Merlynston station bikepath is open again from the Shorts Rd crossing and Ararat Ave. But the tree plantings only go a short way. Where are the trees providing shade past the station, Dad? Don’t the landscapers understand #UrbanHeat and need for canopy shade given the #ClimateCrisis? No trees to Boundary Road. Sheeesh. We felt sorry so let him have a latte at Ceres Joe’s Garden. Really, a lovely spot. Then off to the off lead park for us to have a run, then home via #UpfieldBikePath where we inspected progress on the bike path construction at Merlynston. It was getting pretty hot by then.”
