Ein Gefühl wie 2008: ganz ohne Internet zuhause

Neulich hatte ich einen Flashback in die Nullerjahre. Damals war ich Kunde bei der Cablecom (später UPC, heute Sunrise). Ein Merkmal dieses Hosting-Providers war das administrative Chaos, das eine im Herbst 2008 mir und vielen anderen Leidensgenossinnen lange Perioden ohne Onlinezugang bescherte. Das war ein Dauerbrenner-Thema in diesem damals brandneuen Blog. Nach etwas Ärger mit dem Digitalfernsehen ging es am 12. November los. Am Tag danach ergaben sich interessante Erkenntnisse zu den Ursachen, und am 16. November besorgte ich mir ein Analogmodem, um wenigstens ein paar Mails abholen zu können.

Anfang März erlebte dieser Haushalt erneut eine längere Offline-Phase. Das ist eine interessante Gelegenheit für einige Gedanken darüber, wie sich die Rolle des heimischen Internetzugangs in den letzten 16 Jahren veränderte.

Siri dreht am Rad

Die offensichtliche Erkenntnis ist der Bedeutungsgewinn. Als Computerjournalist und Internetfreak empfand ich es 2008 als massive Zumutung, keine oder nur minimale Internetnutzung pflegen zu können. Doch heute ärgere ich mich nicht nur selbst, sondern muss auch meiner Tochter erklären, warum bei Netflix nichts läuft und Teleboy die Kooperation verweigert. Noch schlimmer: Es droht ein totaler Stillstand. Zumindest bei Leuten, die in einem Smarthome leben, in dem ohne Cloud nichts mehr geht. Bei uns ist das zum Glück nicht der Fall. Auch ohne Siri lassen sich die Lampen aus- und wieder einschalten.

Apropos Siri: Bemerkenswert finde ich gleichwohl, dass Apples digitale Assistentin eine Art Nervenzusammenbruch erlitt. Sie kaperte sich einen unserer drei Homepods und gab im Sekundentakt Meldungen aus, dass das WLAN nicht erreichbar sei. Dabei fiel sie sich selbst ins Wort. Angesichts dieses psychotischen digitalen Stotterns fragt man sich schon, ob wir unsere Abhängigkeit vom Datennetz nicht zu weit getrieben haben.

Das Analogmodem hilft heute nicht mehr weiter, weil Internetverbindungen über die Telefonleitungen seit 2017 abgeschafft wurden. Der persönliche Hotspot ist hingegen ein hervorragender Ersatz: Per Handy lässt es sich im Homeoffice arbeiten – theoretisch zumindest. Es entbehrt nicht einer gewissen Ironie, dass mein Mobilfunkanbieter just bei mir zu Hause eine Abdeckung von einem, maximal zwei Bälkchen zu bieten hat. Es wirkt geradezu so, als wolle die Cablecom noch über ihr Grab hinaus via ihren Erben Sunrise mich meiner Datenabhängigkeit vergewissern.

Braucht es einen 5G-Router für den Notfall?

Ist es eine Option, den ganzen Netflix-, Teleboy- und Spotify-Konsum via 5G abzuwickeln? Für Leute mit besserer Abdeckung ganz bestimmt – zumindest zur Überbrückung eines kurzfristigen Aussetzers. Als Dauerlösung empfehlen es Experten wie Init7-Betreiber Fredy Künzler nicht: «‹Glasfaser durch die Luft› ist zwar möglich, aber nur in Ausnahmefällen sinnvoll», sagt er.

Darum halte ich die Anschaffung eines Mobilfunkrouters nur zur Pannenüberbrückung – den digitalen Entzugserscheinungen zum Trotz – für überzogen. Als temporäre Lösung funktioniert es brillant, das Android-Telefon an den Router anzuhängen und die Datenpakete statt via Glasfaser über das Mobilfunknetz zu beziehen. Nebst der unerfreulichen Tatsache, sich vielleicht doch ins Büro begeben zu müssen, ist die akute Gefahr von Langeweile das grösste Problem des Internetausfalls. Was nützt es, wenn im Keller zwar ein paar Blurays lagern, aber kein Abspielgerät mehr greifbar ist? Da rückt unvermittelt jene USB-Festplatte in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit, auf der (hüstel) seit Jahren unbeachtet die Ausbeute früherer Bittorrent-Sessions liegt. Auch die lange schändlich ignorierte Mediathek erlebt einen Aufschwung und das DAB+-Radio hat endlich Gelegenheit, mehr als nur die Morgennachrichten von sich zu geben. Ach, und bestimmt nützlich zu wissen: Netzwerk-ID ist 43018 und die Startfrequenz 306 MHz.

Wer war schuld?

Eine Sache wäre da noch. Natürlich wollt ihr wissen, wo diesmal das Problem lag. War wiederum ein administratives Chaos die Ursache dafür, dass mir die Leitung gekappt wurde? Nein. «Die Patchung am XMDF war defekt», beschied man mir, nachdem das Problem nach gut vier Tagen behoben war. Als Nicht-Netzwerktechniker interpretiere ich das so, dass zwischen meiner Glasfaserleitung und dem Verteiler im Netz (Crossover Distribution Frame) ein Problem aufgetreten war.

Und noch etwas war anders: Der Kontakt mit der Hotline des Providers und dem Support war anders als vor 16 Jahren speditiv und konstruktiv. 2017 wechselte ich zum Winterthurer Provider Init7, wo kein Grosskonzern-, sondern KMU-Groove herrscht. Ich konnte zu Fuss den Testrouter abholen, den man mir für die Fehlerbehebung zur Verfügung stellte. Und dort traf ich obendrein Reto, der mir erzählte, dass er seit Jahren regelmässig den Nerdfunk hört …

In 2025, they’re two strikingly different audiences — the Calgary business luncheon that stood up and cheered twice for Prime Minister Mark Carney when he discussed his pro-pipeline memorandum of understanding with Alberta one day, and the United Conservative gathering that booed Alberta Premier Smith on the same topic the next day.
They hope for some internal stability, as the UCP begins nominating candidates and makes other pivotal preparations for the 2027 election. But the new party board remains a jumble of pro-independence activists and federalists.

That’s the new apparent dividing line within a party formed in a shotgun marriage between the Progressive Conservatives and Wildrosers.

It remains Danielle Smith’s party, but much of it is also loyal to Jeffrey Rath and a very different movement, pushing loudly in a very different direction. And the leader will have to continue figuring out how both of those facts can coexist without further clashes, or worse ones.
