We've reported on the #uOttawa childcare centre and the workers' union campaign there. Garderie Bernadette Child Care Centre is now being threatened with closure, and the union is calling for public support.
Here's their statement and how you can help:

Jonathan O'Neil of the University of Ottawa telling the story of the Hadean mantle and crust from the few scraps of rocks left to us from that time. Short- and long-lived isotopic systems constrain the timing and processes of the Earth's first crust. The second keynote at the Geotop annual meeting, hosted at ÉTS.

“You’re pushing people away from this service.”
Unreliability, fare hikes, route cuts, broken agreements and a train line that's been down for 4 years; we report on the ongoing tragedy of public transit in #Ottawa.

I took a short video of the #uottawa occupation of Tabaret for #FreePalestine yesterday.
A sit-in at the university started yesterday, calling for ceasefire and BDS of Israel. #OccupyTabaret is still going on and extended for the whole week despite the rainy weather. They're requesting attendees bring tarps, picnic blankets, flashlights, containers, hand warmers, lawn chairs, umbrellas chargers and hot food.
This has been one of the largest and exciting protests I've seen in #Ottawa in years!

The future of Garderie Bernadette Child Care Centre at University of Ottawa is uncertain as demolition plans do not include a new space.
We reported on the importance of the workers' union drive in 2022: https://leveller.ca/child-care-workers-unite/
"If you're keeping parents out of these spaces ...you're really contributing to a university, to a campus, that does not actually want everybody participating."

One of my favourite parts of being a senator? School visits. Friday, I spoke (via Zoom) to a University of Ottawa law class on digital regulation, taught by @mgeist. This afternoon, I Zoomed with Grade 6 students at Covenant Canadian Reformed School, a private Christian school in Barrhead, Alberta. Later this week? Visits with Grade 9 classes at Esther Starkman & John D. Bracco Jr Highs in #Edmonton. Great do to this, while the Senate's not sitting. #SenateofCanada #yeg #Alberta #UOttawa

OPIRG-GRIPO is facing a defunding campaign at #UOttawa
Our independent journalism wouldn't exist without campus Ontario Public Interest Research Groups, their funding, organizational support and history of community and campus activism.
We encourage #Ottawa University students to vote NO on defunding OPIRG-GRIPO.
Read more about the defunding campaign and OPIRG-GRIPO from their op-ed in the Fulcrum here: https://thefulcrum.ca/opinions/opirg-referendum-question/

I would be interested to know why, at #UOttawa, there is a centre for law, technology, and society, and a legal technology lab within it, but neither do anything in the realm of symbolic AI, and there is a contract specification and modelling group that does smart contracts in symbolic AI at EECS, but somehow not only is there no overlap in their membership, the law group has zero computer scientists, and the comp sci group has zero lawyers.
Missed opportunities abound.

Another lovely bird from my local area, before we head to Tanzania. This is a green heron, focusing hard on his hunt for wee fish, big bugs, or unlucky frogs.
Sometimes, the best nature is the nature that’s nearby.

Sometimes, the most wonderful nature experiences are close to home. Nature is nearby. I like this vision for lots of reasons, one of which is that it is more inclusive. Anyone can choose to experience it, and find their own Barred Owl, like this one in Ottawa (at Mud Lake).

One reason why you never, EVER wander into the grass in Serengeti. You never know who is lying down in the midst of it. Or how big their teeth might be.
Can’t wait for the Tanzania field course to start! Less than 3 weeks to go!

@Anthro @Ceedave The 4.3 Ga age is from coupled Nd-Sm systems (short and long lived); the mafic rocks do not have zircons. The younger age is from zircons in cross-cutting felsic units. This is the work of Jonathan O'Neil (now at #uottawa) https://mcgillnews.mcgill.ca/s/1762/news/interior.aspx?sid=1762&gid=2&pgid=1190

Some of the rind remains and is compositionally distinct. Recent work has used triple oxygen to constrain seawater chemistry (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0012821X22001753)

In 2021, #Ottawa #Ontario workers at the Garderie Bernadette Centre won #labour union certification with the #IWW while working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Now #UOttawa is demolishing the centre's building without plans to offer chlidcare.

I think I’m due for an #introduction! I’m an MD/PhD student at #uOttawa, doing my PhD in #neuroscience with Jean-Claude Béïque and Richard Naud. My work explores how uncertainty in reward feedback is processed in #prefrontal cortex, mainly in the context of #autism.
To do this, I use #behavior tasks in mice along with simultaneous in vivo two-photon calcium imaging. I also model #learning and #DecisionMaking using #ReinforcementLearning #RL.
Some of my other interests include patch clamp #ephys, post #stroke #synapse remodeling, #serotonin, #psychedelics and #consciousness.
Follow if you want to join me in finding and sharing interesting papers and ideas!

#Introduction time! #NeuroscienceMigration
🎓 I'm a PhD candidate in #neuroscience at #uOttawa searching for a one-sentence explanation of what #serotonin does in the 🧠.
💻 I take a bottom-up #computational and systems neuroscience approach, creating new mathematical and software tools to link (electro)physiology and function.
Follow for papers and #python, maybe some #urbanism on the side.
