  1. #crossBorderTrain : #Grenoble #Brussels #Amsterdam #Alkmaar #EgmondAanZee

It would have been a long day, even for someone using #unsustainable #travel means, plus I only need to be at destination 3pm tomorrow. Too early for same day travel, silly to arrive day before.

So I took #train (of course) and broke it in Brussels, where I'm enjoying good food tonight!

#tgv and #eurostar on time, good WiFi, quiet (with lively though OK little children)

  2. From the Bretton Woods Project: #Growth-based model #unsustainable

"In general, the growth-based approach to poverty reduction that the World Bank and IMF both promote has immense environmental consequences, as is evidenced by the deepening climate crisis. As noted by former World Bank Chief Economist Sir Nicholas Stern in 2007, 'Climate change is a result of the greatest market failure the world has seen.' Since their inception, the BWIs have played a formative role in aiding and abetting the global forces that have caused this market failure, through promoting economic growth as the core component of their development model, despite – as noted in the aforementioned Deaton report – mixed evidence that economic growth and poverty reduction are linked. While the Bank, and to a lesser extent, the Fund, have both increasingly tried to account for environmental and climate factors in their work over recent decades, these efforts have largely been limited to attempting to integrate these concerns into a growth-based development model."

  3. "The increasing severity of #wildfires and #drought highlights that reforming #ForestStewardship – taking better care of the forests, including safeguarding #OldGrowthForests – is one of our best hopes to protect communities across B.C.

Harmful #forestry practices like #clearcutting and #unsustainable #IndustrialLogging make extreme heat and wildfires worse. #Clearcuts are #tinderboxes, more prone to creating embers because dead trees and branches dry out in the hot sun and become more #flammable. Tree plantations and improperly tended young forests also increase wildfire risk: Younger trees have thinner bark and low-hanging branches that can act as ladder fuels, and the trees are often planted too close together, making it easy for fire to spread.

Fortunately, intact and properly managed #forests are more resilient to the worsening wildfires and heatwaves. For example, #OldGrowth #rainforests have dense canopies which provide cooling shade that resists fire. They are cooler and wetter than young forests, acting as giant sponges. Old-growth trees in the drier interior have thick bark, high branches and are widely spaced which all reduce #WildfireRisk.

  4. #Fuel will become 25-30 percent more #expensive for a lot of #people in #Hungary from January 2023 - Daily News Hungary

Mr Holoda is a former #secretary of state for #energetics under the #Orbán #government. He told mfor.hu yesterday that the government’s fuel #priceCap scheme will be abolished soon because it leads to #supply challenges and it is #unsustainable.
