The fact that 10 years after @MsPhelps and I included equity in our working definition of #OpenScience in the form an 'open to participation' pillar (see https://im2punt0.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/defining-open-science-definitions/) we are now at #FOR2026 conference discussing how to include equity in OS means that this change moves at glacial speed and there may be strong incentives against it. One of these might be #universityrankings with their huge inbuilt colonial legacy.

Citing openness and validity issues, Sorbonne University in France decides to no longer supply data to the THE-ranking and thus get delisted. A courageous step (actually it's a bad sign that we have a situation where this requires courage). Received the annual invite to THE's Global Academic Reputation Survey. 📩 To me, this feels like a game of name recognition. For example, I was asked to rank 5 universities in my field, and I didn’t recognize a single one. 🤷 I chose not to respond, but I suspect many do. As a result, rankings often reflect stereotypes or general perceptions, not real knowledge of academic excellence.
