  3. The bit that you skip #216: ‘Til Tuesday – Coming up close

I’ve got a weird story with Aimee Mann’s beautiful music. I was living in Nottingham, and had a video rental place a couple of blocks from my student accommodation (Albion House). On my hour long walk from my gaff to the Environmental Science department, I would listen to a lot of music, most of it bands that I missed growing up, and whatever soothed my nerves.

I’d do some shopping if needed, then pop by the rental store. One pound per DVD for 2 nights (I think). I caught up with a massive back catalogue of classic movies I needed to watch. Some delivered, like Dog Day Afternoon and Apocalypse Now, others left me a little befuddled, like the Godfather and Scarface. No hate to those two flicks, I just felt there was too much hype behind them and I think I fell for it. Should’ve tempered my expectations.

A lot of indie flicks from the 90s never made it to Mexico or I simply couldn’t manage to catch them. Boogie Nights blew me away, so did Living in Oblivion, and Go. One night I was feeling a bit lost and chose Magnolia, one that had been on my list for ages, but I wasn’t so sure about. P.T. Anderson had some hype behind, so I complied.

It’s one of those flicks that really deserve a watch. It has an expansive amount of stories and you’ll identify with a few. Or will experience them later in your life, like I did. The music really spoke to me, and I rented the CD from the music library at University of Nottingham.

Aimee Mann. The name rung a bell, but I thought little about it as I had a few deadlines coming up and Wikipedia wasn’t really a thing. I was done with Yahoo groups and BBS, so couldn’t be arsed to look more on her work.

A woman I fancied had never seen Jerry Maguire and I managed to convince her to watch it with me. I loved the movie since its debut and I was keen on a rewatch. She wasn’t impressed, as she was a Tom Cruise hater, but loved the music, which is a natural conclusion to any Cameron Crowe flick. We looked at the credits. Aimee Mann was right there with Wise Up, which was included also on the Magnolia soundtrack. So we had another date and watched Magnolia.

It didn’t work out with this woman, and that’s fine, life is like that. Cultural differences and all that.

So I was a little down on the dumps and the guy from the music library approached me. We had a some chit chat and he recommended listening to ‘Til Tuesday.

So I rented both ‘Til Tuesday and The Cure’s Pornography. Amazing how both albums helped me after a break up.

“Hey, those vocals sound familiar.” I read the booklet, and there she was. Aimee Mann again.

Her solo albums and ‘Til Tuesdays are massively underrated releases. I know Voices Carry is a little overplayed, but that shouldn’t take away from its powerful lyrics and pop-friendly arrangement. After renting out the whole discography, it was Coming Up Close what truly clicked with me.

A ballad more in tune with college radio, like The Sundays or Grant Lee Buffalo, Coming Up Close is so personal it feels like I’m reading someone else’s diary. Still, the diary entries feel familiar and by all means, I could identify what I was going through with Mann’s lyrics.

Aimee Mann’s music is a soothing balm for broken souls. Heartily recommended.

  4. The it that you skip #197: Kings of Leon – On Call

I never felt at place at Bar One. Then again, I never felt at place at the pub at Trent Building in the University of Nottingham either. Not too keen on the ambiance of student bars, even back when I was one of them. Dudes got rowdy, drinks weren’t that good, and the food was passable at best.

Still, Ivan was a dear friend and he was on a budget. He came from Ukraine and was doing this high falutin’ degree on Engineering. He would sometimes regale me with stories from back home and then go into nerdy stuff about his degree. I understood some of the math and some of the physics, but I would tune out whenever fluids came into topic.

At his accommodation room, he had two kegs for fermentation. One for beer, which never got the fizz he wanted, and another one for mead, which was always on point. I think at one point he tried to make kvass, but the rye bread in Sheffield was never of the quality he needed.

2010 didn’t start on the right foot. Both my PhD and my personal relationships were down on the dumps and I felt stuck in a rut. I would sit at the information commons or at the park after school and let that feeling of saturation seep away. One cold afternoon in February, Ivan saw me and suggested going for a beer at Bar One. Some people from Coors Light were doing promo and giving away lanyards. We took a couple and ordered a few Coors since they were two for one.

Neither of us were fans of American beer, but the price was right and our moods were low. Ivan told me about some troubles he had at the lab, something or other about a wing design. Then the people from Coors came to our table and asked us if we wanted a photograph with their stand. Comp was another round, so we said yes. They had prop stuff for skiing/snowboarding (I was a pint beyond tipsy by then, sorry) and we got dressed in gear for the photos. Ivan kept one photo, I kept the other. We then went back to continue drinking until his friends propped by. I don’t remember how I got home.

However I do remember that his friends were massive metalheads, the kind that think that Dimmu Borgir are ABBA level of metal. These dudes were fond of me because at one party I managed to open a couple of red wine bottles with only a pencil (and a lot of effort). While listening their discussion about the true kings of Black Metal (I can’t even pronounce whatever they chose), I remember hearing a wailing on the back. I knew the song and it felt like my exact emotions. Ivan leaned his head and said “Kings of Leon, matey” and I wrote it down. The song was On Call.

Years later, I ran into a friend of Ivan’s at Tramlines. This friend casually mentioned that Ivan had the photo of both of us on skiing/snowboard gear (damn you, Coors!) on a bookcase and at first thought we were brothers. “Ivan really cares about you, Sam”, I heard while sipping on a strong dark roast coffee that was bringing me back to life. “I need all the friends I can muster right now” I said, as that year was also a terrible one.

Ivan finally got his degree and got a cool job somewhere in a cold country. Haven’t talked to him in a New York minute but I hope he’s doing well and that I always thought he was a straight up cool dude.

On call is one of the best Kings Of Leon songs, and I’m pretty sure it was the moment they achieved pop rock success. Because of the Times, released in 2007, was their most accessible album by then, and old school fans did accuse them of selling out. I thought it was a new leaf, a necessary one for them to turn. It was the right balance of their old and new sound, which got refined and packaged for mass consumption for their massive 2008 album, Only by the night, an album that soared thanks to Use Somebody and Sex on Fire, two evergreen singles that still come up at student bars (rowdy or not) up to this date.

  5. The bit that you skip #194: Happy Mondays – Do it better

24 hour party people is a film that is very close to my dearest memories. Michael Winterbottom’s post-modern, half-truths, half-myths film feels like the intertwining of two different stories: the rise and fall of Joy Division and their gloomy music and the rise and fall of Happy Mondays and their drug-fuelled Madchester defining sound.

A movie I saw at the Nottingham Savoy a few weeks after arriving, the whole story blew my mind. I had an inkling of Joy Division thanks to several covers (Dead Souls by Nine Inch Nails is fave) but I never had an idea of how emblematic they were until I watched the film. It’s cool that the remark about Ian Curtis not been this dark personality conveyed by the myth of his music, but a guy who had some serious doubts about himself while still having a sense of humour. Winterbottom’s casting of Sean Harris (seen later as a supervillain in Mission Impossible) is perfect, just matched by Anton Corbjin’s casting of Sam Riley.

The Happy Mondays section of the film never quite matches the intensity of the first half, but it’s commented on by the constant camera breaking of Steve Coogan. The self-aggrandising myth of Madchester blows things out of proportion, just matching the Mondays’ own sense of irreverence. Danny Cunningham’s portrayal of Shaun Ryder almost feels like something out of Bottom, with plenty of violence and slapstick. However, there is an understated sadness on the meteoric fall of Happy Mondays and how they took Factory Records down with them.

Coogan’s Tony Wilson constantly hyping up his bands is a memorable part of the flick. His off-kilter comparison with W.B. Yeats grows on you, especially when the morbidly simplistic lyrics of a track like Do it better strangely earworm themselves into your soul.

I worked my way through the Happy Mondays’ catalogue thanks to this film and the music library at the University of Nottingham. I can spot the moment the drugs did the talking and singing and kinda lament they lost themselves into a K-Hole. But then again, they wouldn’t be a mythical band if they hadn’t destroyed themselves.

    Double double good indeed.

When I worked at #UniversityOfNottingham new people and those changing roles frequently had problems getting their card access rights sorted.

Luckily I had access to the card management system and was often able to resolve the issues. The only thing I couldn't fix was when the expiry date was wrong on the system. HR were the only ones who could fix the problems they created.
Unfortunately with more redundancies I've been told that there are fewer personnel in HR and delays are getting longer to get these problems fixed

  11. The University Malaise

The UK University sector is currently struggling very badly. The latest piece of news I have seen is from the University of Nottingham, where it seems the Management is planning to cut over 600 jobs. New appointments are being frozen and a voluntary severance scheme launched, but it may well come to compulsory redundancies given the scale of the proposal. I feel sorry for anyone there caught up in this because the mood must be very gloomy right now. None of this is the fault of the academics or support staff on whose positions the axe will fall.

The financial predicament of the University of Nottingham is largely the result of a reckless management decision to acquire a new campus called the Castle Meadow complex.

I worked in Nottingham from 1999 to 2007. At that time the Castle Meadow campus (left) was owned by HM Revenue & Customs. It’s next to the canal and not far from the Railway Station, but not very close to the main campus. I remember passing it many times on the train going in and out of Nottingham.

The University of Nottingham bought the campus from HMRC in 2021 for £37.5 million and spend over £45 million redeveloping it, with the idea of siting the Business School there (among other things), but there was no demand for it and in 2025, the university announced plans to sell the campus at a considerable loss.

Now you would think that the people responsible for this fiasco would be held to account and pay at least some of the price for their incompetence. But no. The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Prof. Shearer West, with whom the responsbility for the Castle Meadow campus disaster, left her post in 2024 to take up the position of Vice-Chancelor at the University of Leeds on a salary of more than £330K, leaving others to clean up the mess. I’m sure the staff and students at Leeds are waiting nervously to see what plans she has in store for their ruination. No doubt she received a glowing reference from Nottingham.

Anyone who thinks that positions with high salaries are always held by highly skilled people need only look at the Higher Education sector for definitive counter-examples.

The pattern of incompetent “leaders” switching jobs before the impact of their incompetence is revealed is a well-established one, but it’s not only the fault of the people at the very top. The entire system of governance is rotten, and not only in the UK. universities and other higher-education institutions have forgotten that the exist above all for education and research. Nowadays they have been captured by a self-serving management class that has lost sight of this and instead acts as if the only purpose is the generation of revenue, not to be spent on teaching and research but on vanity projects (like the Castle Meadow campus) and employing even more managers. Even if they were not being steered unerringly onto the rocks, universities would in any case be in danger of sinking because they are unable to support the weight of their bloated management superstructure.

I saw a post on Bluesky recently that included the following:

I asked a senior administrator what’s causing the University budget deficit.

‘Research & teaching,’ he said, ‘both lose money, not financially viable’

I said, ‘Funny, then, we weren’t losing money in the past when central administration was half the size’

    That’s it in a nutshell.

I only wish this were an isolated example. It’s a systemic problem. Management bloat, expensive vanity projects requiring the diversion of funds from teaching and research, and deeply flawed strategic decisions, are symptoms of a widespread malaise. Unless there are drastic changes, the HE sector is going to shrivel and die.
