For the last three years, me and some other artists have been on a panel about basic income in Ireland. The main focus has been how the artist basic income pilot impacts the broader idea of universal basic income.

We've done a webinar every six months, featuring artists who received the Irish basic income and some who didn't (like me). Recordings all in the link. One of the many arguments for a Universal Basic Income is that it might reduce/prevent copper thefts by desperate people.

Copper thefts are incredibly dangerous and wasteful - people stealing $200 worth of copper cause $50,000 worth of damage to railway signals and pedestrian railway crossings.

And there have been cases where only observant pedestrians prevented serious train crashes after copper thefts broke railway signals.

That Kitchener UBI consultation may have been in regards to the Provincial UBI plan, perhaps to get Kitchener included. This was January 2017 when provincial Liberals were still planning the UBI pilot. But the provincial UBI plan went only to Hamilton/Brantford, Lindsay, and Thunder Bay (not Kitchener/Waterloo), and was cancelled when the Conservatives came to power in 2018.

That's a good question. I've been a proponent of a "Universal Livable Income" in order to really decouple the need for working-for-income with basic survival. But that's more difficult to defend against the "causes inflation", "no-one will ever work", and "where will the money come from" crowds. Not to mention the "they don't deserve it" crowd.

Glad you did engage in that #UBI dust-up.

The beauty of a well-implemented UBI system is its simplicity, and lack of demeaning means-testing.

There have been plenty of UBI pilots (and several actual implementations), none of which show any evidence of UBI-caused inflation.

In comparison, government distribution of goods and services is more akin to the worst parts of state-run comminism.
