#unisuper I am looking at you 😬 you are in this negligent crowd of #superfunds not supporting #renewables or if then only in a tokenistic way 😒

Thanks, #UniSuper - always flattering to be informed I'm in my pre-retirement era already. I know I'm no spring chicken, but still... let's not rush things, heh!

HAH 😬 just looked up #unisuper and that's what their webdude decided to call their page on the "#geopolitical events" topic 😳

'A key topic where APRA has observed weakness is the use of data backups to protect an entity against data loss'.

If you've been following the #UniSuper #GCP #outage, the Incident report is out, and it's a good read - transparent, detailed, clearly outlines scope, actions, impact.
As someone who used to do this stuff for a living, I'm impressed.

A major pension fund in Australia had its Google Cloud account inadvertently deleted due to a bug, causing major disruptions as its services and backups were deleted. Thankfully the pension fund had offsite backups.
A good reminder to build redundancies and have backup of backups.

When reading the various statements in the #unisuper debacle, esp https://www.unisuper.com.au/contact-us/outage-update#outagecause, one comes across
Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian has confirmed that the disruption arose from an unprecedented sequence of events whereby an inadvertent misconfiguration during provisioning of UniSuper’s Private Cloud services ultimately resulted in the deletion of UniSuper’s Private Cloud subscription.
This is an isolated, ‘one-of-a-kind occurrence’ that has never before occurred with any of Google Cloud’s clients globally. This should not have happened. Google Cloud has identified the events that led to this disruption and taken measures to ensure this does not happen again.
This heavily reminds me of this fitting Australian video.

That is scary.
"shoutout to the hero at #UniSuper who chose a multi- #cloud solution"

Apparently Google accidentally deleted all online data from UniSuper, a superannuation fund with half a million members.
UniSuper was only able to restore from backups from a different service. If they'd been solely relying on Google, then UniSuper and their members would be screwed.
Google says "This is an isolated, ‘one-of-a-kind occurrence’" But I'm seeing reports on Lemmy claiming to have dealt with similar problems with Google, suggesting this only the first *major* customer it has happened to.
In any case, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Even that that basket tries to make it ever-so-convenient for you to give them everything.

Oopsie ...
Lessons learned:
• There is no cloud, it's just someone else's computer.
• Always have multiple backups. Multiple backups save the day.Google Cloud accidentally deleted UniSuper's (investment company, $125bn in funds) entire cloud environment. #UniSuper had backups in another region, but #Google deleted those too. Luckily, UniSuper had yet more backups on another provider. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/may/09/unisuper-google-cloud-issue-account-access

#UniSuper is one big #supperannuation fund in #Australia with about 600,000 members holding more than $160 billion.
Their platform has been suffering an #outage for more than a week due to issues with #Google #Cloud (#GCP), where they migrated to last year.
It has been finally explained that the issue was Google deleting the whole cloud environment 🤦
Hopefully this event will bring attention and consequences.

What an absolute cock-up. #enshittification continues.
If I provided the latest statement, I would have been much more pointed about, in this instance, the abject failure of a certain multinational.
