  1. If there was such a thing as good #billionaires they would buy up companies in sectors known for underpaying their employees and start paying them decent wages with benefits and good pension and encourage #unionization so the workers would have a voice not just their paternalism.

  2. Normalize Unionizing Fast Food Restaurants!!

This is the best part of this story: “Andrews said the employees were looking for help communicating with new management, who workers said is consistently ignoring any concerns they bring forward.”

When people know why unions exist (to help speak for employees!) they seek them out!

  5. Workers Are About To Get Way More Power. Here's How.

    youtube.com/watch?v=dot6WXrKty

The National Labor Relations Board could soon make it much easier for workers to unionize. The board plans to re-establish the Joy Silk Doctrine, which would force employers to recognize and bargain with their employees' union if a majority of workers sign authorization cards.

This would turn the tables in favor of workers and eliminate a key union-busting tactic employers use to stifle organizing. By enabling workers to unionize via card check and preventing employers from dragging out the process into a time-intensive union election, the decision would make it vastly easier for workers to win a union.

  6. #Malaysia has become a hotspot for global #electronics & #semiconductor investment, with country's electrical & electronics export seeing a sharp increase of 54.2%. However, the surge of electronics & semiconductor investment in Malaysia is sharply contrasted with low #unionization; only 6% of all #Malaysian #workers are #unionized, the majority in the public sector.

  7. The #restaurant #industry has long coordinated efforts to suppress labor costs through the #NRA, a multimillion-dollar #lobbying machine funded both by its restaurant members and by the fees #workers pay for required food-safety classes, according to a recent New York Times report.

The group has spent its #war chest on lobbying campaigns to preserve a subminimum #wage for tipped workers — who are disproportionately young, women, and people of color, and far more likely to live in #poverty than regular minimum wage workers — and to help block state and federal sick leave proposals and minimum wage increases.

But now, restaurant executives are on edge. #Union campaigns are suddenly penetrating their industry, which employs about 10 percent of the American #workforce and has one of the lowest #unionization rates of any sector. Over the past few years, baristas have #unionized nearly 280 Starbucks stores in the face of enormous odds, and dozens of other coffee #shops and restaurants have followed suit.

“The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, every newspaper reports on every union win… when an unfair labor practice charge is filed, when there are challenges to elections,” said Felice Ekelman, a principal at Jackson Lewis, one of the oldest and most infamous union avoidance law firms in the country. “When did this become first page #news?”

“And guess who’s reading it?” replied Laura Pierson-Scheinberg, one of Ekelman’s Jackson Lewis colleagues, as the two sat across from each other on the main stage of the summit. “My kids. Literally. I have an 18-year-old, my kids are into it.”

The two lawyers were discussing a new threat for the restaurant industry: the unexpected rise of union campaigns in workplaces that, for decades, have largely been immune from such organizing efforts.

“Before, I used to say… ‘[Unionization] isn’t a problem for you in the restaurant industry,’” said Pierson-Scheinberg. But now, she warned, “Kids do not care about paying union dues. Two percent of pay, are you kidding me? Their Netflix costs more. They think it’s a hell of a deal.”

The “kids,” she added, are #organizing #workplaces which would have previously seemed unreachable.

  8. Thanks to @anaulin and @internetross for co-facilitating a conversation with the internal folks who facilitated the #unionization efforts at Exygy, a #Software #Consultancy.

  10. Faced with a labor market rife with adversity, a circle of nannies in New York City have done something extraordinary, overturning economists’ assumptions about “self-interested” markets.
Operating in the shadows, these workers have created microeconomies of their own, where they are able to share resources, and protect their jobs and pay.
Transcending basic notions of mutual aid, the operations of this underground network allow this group of nannies to send lifelines to one another.
Their informal economies offer lessons in #redistribution, the value of #unionization and the power of #comradery

  11. Union Halls used to play an important role as '3rd space' for the working class... and I think that maybe we need to bring them back. Instead of having each #union operate it's own hall however we should look at having common union halls (thus spreading the cost over a wider base) open to all members of the working class as a place for casual socialisation.

  12. RE: flipboard.com/@cnn/entertainme

can i just say something about #Colbert?

whomever negotiated his #CBS #labor & production contracts are geniuses.

have y’all noticed how, notwithstanding everything, they can't get rid of him outright?

Colbert must have nuclear options in his & his workers contracts that exponentially raise the costs of CBS getting rid of them under any circumstances.

this is only possible with the backing of labor #unions. Hollywood proves #unionization is the only path to wealth for the working classes.

  13. How the new Labour Codes undid 70 years of labour rights progress of working journalists

With one stroke, working journalists and other workmen in newspaper establishments have lost labour benefits they have enjoyed since 1955, when two protective laws were first legislated to protect their service conditions and rates of wages.

  14. The cost of living in my area has skyrocketed over the past decade, particularly in the last few years. This is the third most expensive state in the USA for housing, and has been for quite a while.

I work at a large statewide corporation. A lot of my co-workers are pissed. We've been getting between 1% to 3% raises per year, most years, but that's NOTHING compared to the cost of living.

At a corporate-wide online meeting not too long ago, management made the mistake of leaving the side-chat open to all. The cost of living came up *immediately*. A number of people, the younger ones mostly, asked the CEO about cost of living raises. They dodged the question as much as they could, but eventually someone - a flunky, I think - said "The cost of living is not a factor in our recompense decisions."

That was NOT what they wanted to hear! People were furious, and saying things that honestly surprised even me with their stark honesty. The meeting ended early. Just in case you were wondering, the chat option was never available again.

After that meeting, I called a union organizing number. They told me I needed to get people to sign union cards. There was NO WAY I could get that done; the company has thousands of employees, and the few that I know personally moved up into management long ago. I'd considered trying to start an online group (on Facebook, Discord, wherever) to reach co-workers, but that would mean putting my name on it or at least having the very high probability that I could be tracked and found. Which would mean I'd be out on the street.

For some reason they couldn't or wouldn't set up an online group. I don't know why. I approached one person I knew pretty well at work, but it seemed clear from their reaction that they weren't open to the idea of a union. What could I do?

It seems to me that there should be some way to set up a "XXX Company Union Talk" group somewhere anonymously. But of course that's the sort of thing that the oligarchs are DEAD set against. I think that's a big part of their reason for eliminating anonymity from the web.

Still, it bothers the hell out of me. Any thoughts?

  15. On April 6, 1980, the #Canadian #Farmworkers #Union came into existence. This film documents the conditions among #Chinese and #EastIndian #ImmigrantWorkers in #BritishColumbia that provoked the formation of the union, and the response of growers and #labour contractors to the threat of #unionization. Made over a period of two years, the #documentary film is eloquent testimony to the progress of the #WorkersMovement from the first stirrings of militancy to the energetic canvassing of union members.

#Automaker has always had hard stance against #unions, and it has been able to fend off #unionization efforts at its manufacturing facilities. Several other unions in Sweden have joined forces to mess with Tesla’s operations in order to put pressure on the company. Port workers, electricians, and cleaning services that deal with Tesla in the country have refused to work with the company!
