If a thief knows that a conviction for murder will get him into no more trouble than a conviction for theft, he’s naturally impelled to kill the person that he’d otherwise merely have robbed. It’s no worse for him if he’s caught, and it gives him a better chance of not being caught, and of concealing the crime altogether by eliminating the only witness.

It struck me during Carl's talk that massive, general LLMs are yet another technology that, through the competitive haste of capitalism, we’ve unleashed globally without considering all of the likely effects on things we value (like social cohesion, functional democracies, and a healthy biosphere). As usual, we’ll now live through all these consequences and will scramble to undo the worst of the damage.
We’ve done the same with chlorofluorocarbons, DDT, acid rain, whaling, forever chemicals, cars,... It’s what we do, but every new global-scale technology is a gamble that it won’t irrevocably damage civilisation and the biosphere. Eventually we’re going to lose that gamble.
To drive a large, global high-tech civilisation for thousands of years, we have to learn to be *much* more restrained and future smart. Are we capable of that?

To a first approximation, *everything* in Walmart except food is made in China. And much of the food comes from Canada and Mexico. Ditto for virtually every other low-price retailer.
How is that cost-of-living voter going to feel when the price of everything at Walmart goes up by 40, 50, 60% or more?
Either Cheeto Mussolini is going to get a very swift #economics lesson, or his billionaire backers are going to get him to back down on tariffs.

With the orange one's blathering about slapping #tariffs on #imports from #Canada, #Mexico, and #China, lots of people are pointing out (correctly!) that it's #USAnian #consumers that will pay the (literal) price of the tariffs. Manufacturers and importers pass their #costs along to the final buyer; there's no other way it can work.
The claimed "cost of living" MAGA voters are going to get a really nasty shock as these price increases work through the system, particularly the China one. Dear Leader has said he wants an eventual 60%, or even 100% tariff on everything from China.
To a first approximation, *everything* in Walmart except food is made in China. And much of the food comes from Canada and Mexico. Ditto for virtually every other low-price retailer.

The #Apple Wallet app in #IOS 15.4 or later allows you to store a digital copy of your #US #DriversLicense. Supposedly this is to make #TSA checkpoints less cumbersome to get through. Part of the process of enabling this is taking a #selfie to prove the owner of the #license is present during the process. The State of #Georgia just rolled out this capability on May 18. I'm so frustrated by the public debate about #SocialMedia since the mosque shootings. People who seem to have only just noticed that corporate dominance of the net causes problems are jumping on kneejerk solutions like mass #censorship and removal of services (eg FB turning off #LiveStreaming). They seem oblivious to the #UnintendedConsequences that, like those of #Article13 of the #EUCopyrightDirective, are blatantly obvious to those of us who have been studying the systemic problems for years.
