  29. It was a pity that the beautiful sunny weather of day one of our week-long strike at the University of Melbourne didn't continue into day two... but as we chanted this morning: "we will hold the picket line - rain, hail, or shine!"

    And that we did! Surrounded by a solid turnout of amazing union members, it was an awesome day regardless of the non-stop rain. 😄✊💜

  30. The #NTEU Has a Plan to
    Improve Working Conditions
    More Secure Work
    Manageable Workloads
    Better Parental / Carer's Leave
    Restrict Restructures
    Fair Pay
    Better Flexible & Work from Home Arrangements

  31. SAFE WORKLOADS. The union has proposed a range of improvements to workloads, which are in crisis across the sector. These include:
    • promptly filling vacancies;
    • backfilling absent staff;
    • limiting restructures;
    • consulting on reasonable workload allocation policies;
    • a ≥40% research component for new academic roles by default, factoring in the time required for academic staff to maintain currency in their field and undertake their research.

  32. Spent the day wading though the translation of written exams to digital format for #unimelb - some observations:

    Commercial OCR is cactus
    Handwriting is a dead art form
    Scans are unreliable and vary hugely in colour
    Anything that relies on a choice of answers should be done exclusively online

  36. My University of Melbourne library blog post on our 2023 #OpenAccess publishing agreements is now live. It aims to not just highlight our new and continuing agreements, most of which are #ReadAndPublish agreements negotiated by #CAUL, but to contextualise these alongside other pathways to open access, including open access journals (many of which don't charge APCs), Subscribe to Open (S2O) journals, and our institutional repository.

    Who is on your #ConnectionList?

  38. I just changed instances. Hello #aus.social! Glad to be here!

    Here's an #introduction.

    I'm a #prof in computational #cogsci at #UniMelb. I use behavioural experiments and mathematical models to study how people #learn and #reason. I think a lot about how we make #inferences from sparse #data, how we #share information with each other, and how this affects our #cultural and #informational #systems.

    I am a #parent to two amazing kids, love #teaching #rstats to psychology undergraduates, am an #American living in #Australia (citizen of both) in the beautiful #Dandenongs, and am #trans (see post below). I try not to take myself too seriously, especially on social media.
