  1. i have a thing to complain about.
i have recently been getting into keyboards and alternative layouts. which is all well and good.
    i have three keyboards: a #unicomp model m, a #corne , and a #hhkb .
the corne was already vial compatible, i was able to flash new firmware for my unicomp and that's just fine.
the hhkb. the hhkb only use a proprietary remapping tool, and my hhkb, the professional classic, is not supported for the arbitrary reason that it is the base model.

  2. Things that are awesome: buckling spring keyboards. Decided it was time to clean the keycaps so pulled them all off, tossed them into the ultrasonic cleaner, heated the water to about 55C, added a few drops of dish soap, and let them clean for about 15 minutes.

Removed the keycaps, blew them off with my Wolfbox blower, then eventually installed them back into the keyboard. It's nice to have the keyboard clean and clicky. Also: installing buckling spring keycaps is a pain in the ass.

  4. finally decided to take apart my #unicomp #modelm and flash qmk firmware onto it. it worked great and now my caps lock is permanently control :^)

  5. so i have been using my #unicomp model m after using my #hhkb for ages with my laptop and in many ways its a nicer experience. sometimes i miss the dedicated arrow keys. however. my model m is iso uk layout, the same as my laptop. but i have gotten really used to the hhkb american layout.
things like the escape key being closer, the backspace being above the enter, control on caps lock (by default, i use software to rebind it on my built in laptop keyboard and my unicomp).

  19. My next big wiki page revision is coming along nicely! #Unicomp, the 'torchbearers' of #bucklingspring #IBMModelM #ModelM keyboards, deserves a good, informative, factual page as well! Aiming for a release potentially as early as a few days, maybe a week?

  23. So, apparently, there's a company in Kentucky from whom one can purchase 'genuine' :-) IBM Model-M (USB) keyboards. I mean, like, wow.

  24. I have been dreaming of purchasing this particular keyboard for a long time. Since the beginning of 2020, I wrote to the mail of the company that produces this keyboard for the purpose of delivery from America to Russia. Only after 4 years I finally succeeded 🥹

  25. Dug my 2011 #Unicomp #keyboard out of the attic and... true to memory, the "ruffian v4_2" USB controller is dead. No response (including anything in dmesg) when plugged directly into a USB port. The cable continuity on all pins tests fine. Not sure what the issue could be, and it's surprisingly difficult to find a replacement for sale online...

  27. @lightning It's a #Unicomp Classic 104 USB. Also have some vintage Model Ms but got this one when I built a new desktop a few years ago with no PS/2 support. It's pretty decent.

  28. My New #ModelM #keyboard from #Unicomp came a couple of days ago. While it does offer a delightful flashback to the early 90s, it took me just over an hour to realize that it probably isn't for me. Why? While it does have a lovely click, it rattles. A lot. It doesn't have any media keys. It's not programmable (since it's shipped with the old Ruffian controller). The Danish layout comes with the Win key just right of Space, which is weird (we usually have AltGr there). Also, coming from TKL keyboards, I think I've realized that going back to a full sized keyboard probably wasn't the greatest idea.

In short, if you're looking for an absolute unit of a keyboard that's conservative and noisy, this is probably right up your alley. I used to love them.

Poke me if you're looking for reasonably priced one with a Danish layout ;-)

  30. I just ordered the New Model M keyboard from #Unicomp Inc. a couple of day ago, but now I'm thinking I may have jumped the gun. People in the know are saying that the original #IBM Model Ms were developed to cut down on cost compared to the previous #ModelF keyboards. Corners were cut - everything from changing the frame from metal to plastic and simplifying the buckling spring mechanics of the keys, sacrificing durability and losing the "right click sound". Unicomp is churning out Ms on an old production line they took over from #Lexmark and keeping units at around $125. At the other end of the scale, Joe Strandberg of #ModelFLabs has started up a brand new production line for his Model F clones. At $399 it's more than three times the price of the Unicomp New #ModelM, and while I realize it's damned close to religion, I'm also very very intrigued. I'll let you know if this is going to happen.

  32. I'm really not a keyboard geek, but I do have a somewhat romantic relationship with the clicky-clicky #keyboards of the 80s. Getting a modern keyboard that goes click but isn't a vulgar pulsating gamer keyboard is nearly impossible, but I did come pretty close with the Varmilo TKL I'm using at the home office. Occasionally I hit a keyboard combination that turns on the LEDs which I really loathe, and I've seriously considered taking it apart to break a path on the PCB to disable the LEDs. Realizing that I was too lazy to actually do that, I ordered the New #ModelM from #Unicomp Inc. I've been eyeing it for a long time, and now's the time to give it a go. With postage being nearly as much as the keyboard itself as well as import tax and fees, this will in no way be neither a sane nor reasonable purchase. I expect it will be fun though. We'll see.

  36. @martyn I always keep coming back to buckling spring. I've had 4, but currently possess 2.

I spend so much time on them I forget how nice it is.

Not to say that what #unicomp is putting out is perfect. Their USB connections are baffling (the New Mini M uses a Male-Male USB A cable.. never knew those existed, sometimes keyboards dont get picked up by the BIOS on boot), i'm sure some would like a bluetooth option but, everybody needs a Model M (or a few 😄 ).

Have you had any ALPS-style 'boards
