  1. Today on NovaLandia: "The Allure of Liminal Spaces: Why They're Haunting (and Where It Began)"

Have you ever slipped through a section of your wall that meets the floor, I mean, uhm, scrolled past a photo of an empty hallway, a deserted mall, or a flickering fluorescent waiting room and felt yo...

  2. A quotation from Horace

Fortune nor home not more the man can cheer,
Who lives a prey to covetise or fear,
Than may a picture’s richest hues delight
Eyes that with dropping rheum are thick of sight,
Or warm soft lotions soothe a gout-racked foot,
Or aching ears be charmed by twangling lute.
    On minds unquiet joy has lost its power;
In a foul vessel everything turns sour.

[Qui cupit aut metuit, iuvat ilium sic domus et res,
Ut lippum pictae tabulae, fomenta podagrum,
    Auriculas citbarae collecta sorde dolentes.
Sincerumst nisi vas, quodcumque infundis acescit
    Sperne voluptate.]

Horace (65–8 BC) Roman poet, satirist, soldier, politician [Quintus Horatius Flaccus]
    Epistles [Epistularum, Letters], Book 1, ep. 2 “To Lollius,” l. 51ff (1.2.51-54) (14 BC) [tr. Martin (1881)]

  7. The uneasiness of small town narratives in unfamiliar landscapes

"But there are negative consequences to this construction of the detective as outsider when the outback setting is presented as something unfamiliar, something to be feared. These arise from the origins of Australian Gothic, which scholars have long recognised as an expression of settler-colonial anxiety about the violent dispossession of the country’s Indigenous people."

  12. Is it just me, or does there seem to be a lot of doom and gloom as of late? I don’t read the news all that much anymore but I can still sense it. It feels as if oppression is on the horizon. #unease

  13. I enjoy how this #creepypasta story is just as much about the narrator's development as it is about any phenomena or physical reactions and sensations. (Also see MR James) To me, the best stories---horror or otherwise---show character change in response to experience. I also like this story because it is grounded in some historic truth or actual local legend, which is not necessary of course, but here, it lends itself well to a creation of #unease. #horror #audiostory

  14. Along the way, #Milley deflected #Trump’s exhortations to have the US #military ignore, & even on occasion commit, #WarCrimes. Milley & other military officers deserve praise for protecting #democracy, but their actions should also cause deep #unease. In the #American system, it is the #voters, the #courts, & #Congress that are meant to #serve as #checks on a #president’s behavior, not the generals. #Civilians provide #direction, #funding, & #oversight; the military then follows #lawful #orders.
