  2. Life on the farm in the #UndisclosedLocation is swinging towards spring at a rapid clip.

And we have to replace our rooster so we can hatch more chicks, since our preference is breeding rather than just getting fertilized eggs.

Bought a small poulet, just barely more than a handful of bird, for about $4. Built him a small enclosure with a heat lamp, a feeder and a waterer out of a plastic tub. Perfectly sized for just the one bird.

And a warning that our gosling plans need to be larger.

  3. Le sigh…

Ran into a limitation of the health system in the #UndisclosedLocation. (Ok, I know there are a few, trans care is sadly lacking for example.)

Had to get a blood test (ANA) that wasn’t covered, and I can’t seem to get an ordered ultrasound at my local hospital without hoops.

Biting the bullet and paying out of pocket with a private provider so I get the images and radiology assessment in hand.

And I may need to get a private bile acid blood test.

    Two bloods and a u/s: €90.

    Grr…

  4. Just feeling a bit isolated…

Downside of the #UndisclosedLocation is that I’m in a tiny town.

Had to go to a large city on Tuesday, and connected with a lot of people that day. Now, the craving for connection and community is hitting harder than the absolute exhaustion of pushing myself beyond my limits.

  5. I love it when an area just… shuts down for a day.

Back in #Vancouver, if snow stuck by my sea level flat, the entire city would just… pause. Buses would run, emergency vehicles would roll, but nearly everyone else would wait at home, at least for half a day.

In the #UndisclosedLocation, the roads are all but empty today., at least where I’m passing through.

  6. Started my outbound travels…

Eighteen hours until I’m in #Hamburg and #39c3.

(The #UndisclosedLocation has a lot of advantages, but it’s also near the middle of nowhere. At least the return home will only take something like 8 hours.)

  7. so apparently gift giving is a tradition at #39c3

so i made some from scratch

from the #UndisclosedLocation to the hands of a few (you know who you are..)

  8. I usually translate things I receive in the #UndisclosedLocation. Par for the course when you’re that rare L1 B1 speaker of a language.

But I just died a bit laughing at the translation of my street address.

    (Street number redacted)

  9. Almost a year in the #UndisclosedLocation.

It still blows our minds that we just pulled the trigger to come here last year.

And it’s been a trial, but so far we’re doing what we can to make this work.

Feels good to have a stable foundation with someone you love when you’ve made a leap of faith this big.

  10. To anyone who bashes public healthcare systems:

They can run faster than your private systems (unless you’re spending huge wads of cash).

In the #UndisclosedLocation, I live in the boonies. Yet not only am I able to make appointments with specialists off the hop, but I can get in to see them in less than two weeks. Usually less than one week.

I wish the state paid these medical professionals more.

    They deserve it.

  11. The cold-wet season seems to have started early in the #UndisclosedLocation.

Still adjusting to the rhythms of life here.

And ADHD makes me forget things… and screw up timing on others.

  12. Was told it would take between 1-2 years to adapt to the #UndisclosedLocation.

There are a few things I like adapting to, like stores closed on Sundays, friendlier and more sociable people, and having actual third spaces like cafes.

Not so much a fan of packages and parcels from abroad taking five-ever to get here.

But on the whole, a positive, and knowing I can’t impulse buy anything and expect it next day or same day is a nice thing.

  13. One thing that would make my life easier is if we could get a fiber run to the #UndisclosedLocation.

Half a kilometer by line of sight. Probably a full kilometer for the run proper

That’s how far I am from getting FTTH.

And while my understanding is that I should get FTTH by 2028, that’s three years away and I can’t even think about trying to pay for that myself.

    Grr.

  14. @corbden

One thing I love about moving to the #UndisclosedLocation is actually having the parts of my culture that were denied to me growing up accessible.

The silliest cultural thing so far is a March ritual that literally connects back to pagan times. It’s a tiny thing but I love having that connection.

  15. My domicile at the #UndisclosedLocation is designed, in theory, to keep the place relatively cool in the summer by keeping all the windows open and the shutters closed.

And it does work; when it was getting close to 35 outside, it was 25 inside.

Still, not looking forward to 40 degree days except for how the heat helps my plants.

  16. @cwebber

it’s my guilty pleasure that i allow myself after a day of hard work at the #UndisclosedLocation

especially since the first peppers are coming in…

  17. @JaneImber

Won’t openly say where the #UndisclosedLocation is, but in the half year I’ve lived here (as of a couple days ago), no one has given me grief over being trans.

  18. I just learned how fun it is to ride a minitractor kinda fast.

Definitely dangerous too, not denying that.

    But it is fun.

Also the only real way to chew through several thousand sq m of overgrown fields.

My arms are covered in clover and other unwanted plant debris. My clothes definitely need another wash after that.

    But it was exhilarating.

  19. CW: Weight/Diet (Keto;Meat consumption)

For the last week I’ve been on a fairly hardcore keto eating plan.

I’ve dropped a decent chunk of weight so far, about 3kg, and yes I know a lot of that is water weight.

And I wish my body was better with non-animal protein sources.

My spouse wants to add tofu to the mix. But a downside of the #UndisclosedLocation is that, while I can find some harder to find meats like rabbit and goat easily, I can’t find tofu here.

Might have to learn how to make it.

  20. @curiousrobot @quinn @fraying

Can’t say much about the #UndisclosedLocation (I don’t disclose deets about my domicile online other than that I’m in Europe) other than I am thankful this place is so serene, even if the half dozen cocks in the coop crow all night long.

  21. Sleepless night in the #UndisclosedLocation.

But it is now unquestionably home for me and my spouse after purging the last of our old lives.

Will we miss aspects of North America? Sure.

But we both see which way the wind is blowing, and we had the motive, opportunity and capability to get out, so we have.

Restarting life ain’t easy. But it’s far more preferable than life ending.

  22. All my sleep debt of the last week and change is hitting me right now.

I am a zombie at the gate for my flight…home. Weird to think of the #UndisclosedLocation as home now, but that’s.. what it’s become.

I hope I am less dead when the plane lands.

  23. Nothing like the bureaucracy of the #UndisclosedLocation to drive a person crazy.

Maybe I’m naive to think that the publicly listed requirements on the governments’ websites are all that’s necessary.

Or maybe it’s a half-scam to get people to use other services to help with this..

    ugh

  24. Winter hasn’t just broken here at the #UndisclosedLocation.

    It’s shattered.

This morning, there was a hint of frost. Now it’s nearly 20° (t-shirt weather for our American friends).

Warm enough so I can wash all the heavy blankets this weekend.

And my plants that have overwintered have gotten their first good soak of the year.

  25. It’s so different living in a place where Carnival is A Thing.

Granted it’s not as hardcore as in a lot of other places.

But still, having these cultural events that have links going back to ancient times is.. it’s grounding.

    It feels human.

I’m an insider-outsider here. I run across people that recognize my kin every day.

I’m part of the community yet not fully part of it.

    But I like it.

    #UndisclosedLocation

  26. Spouse and I went to a sportsball game in the #UndisclosedLocation.

It was a decent game. Local team lost. :/

But now let’s look at the cost.

We bought two sodas, a bag of chips, two salami sandwiches, three bags of cookies, and the tickets, for €20.

Just getting in the gate of a stadium stateside for a pro game costs that much. Gods help you if you want concessions there.

Nice way to spend the afternoon.

  27. Working on #LibraryRedAlert to help save books and lit.

Working on @transworldexpress to help save people.

The symmetry is beautiful even if the reason for the symmetry existing is dark.

One does what one can, even if what they can do from the #UndisclosedLocation is limited.

  28. The wood pellets are working better than I expected.

Dammit. Now I’m need to buy more.

Means I’ll need to find a wholesale source for them in the #UndisclosedLocation and I don’t have a car to carry that much wood…

  29. Getting ready to shovel a lot of bird dung.

I gotta do this every week, but I genuinely hate having to do it.

On the plus side, composted poultry waste is excellent as fertilizer. And since I’m hoping to grow some hot peppers and speciality herb in the #UndisclosedLocation (which is legal so long as it’s not sold) I need all the fertilizer I can get.

    Plus it’s a great workout.

  30. Serious question.

The #UndisclosedLocation has undeniably shit hardwire connectivity (unreliable ADSL).

I can get a 4G router that will throttle to 15Mbps after 400GB/mo.

Is that workable if dedicated for remote work? (Assuming the employer doesn’t require a hardline connection which I can’t get here)

  31. #UndisclosedLocation life…

My bandwidth here sucks but I didn’t think it was so low the cat would have a render delay…
