Cold Steel – Discipline & Punish Review

Debut albums are a fickle thing. Often the strongest release by a band for years to come, even giving rise to the term “sophomore slump” when the inevitable follow-up can’t hit the same highs. And so, debuts are make-or-break. For Tampa’s Cold Steel, Discipline & Punish is such a piping hot serving of crossover thrash, I can’t help but be excited for their future. The Florida sextet’s first LP feels so cohesive and energetic; keeping pace will be a challenge. For now, we can revel in the absolute monster that is Discipline & Punish and enjoy a young band that is clearly firing on all cylinders and loving every minute of it.

I had no clue Cold Steel existed before their debut LP showed up in AMG’s promo pile-up, but the great hooks and a sick album cover (I am a simple woman) piqued my interest. I was immediately addicted to the catchy songs, frantic pacing, and infectious energy. Power Trip is fucking awesome (original take), and they constantly came to mind while I spun Discipline & Punish on repeat. It was no surprise then, when I learned that Cold Steel’s debut was produced by none other than Arthur Rizk (Blood Incantation, Undeath, Power Trip), it makes sense that they are the first band in a while that capture that same brand of hook-driven, manic energy that makes you wanna break a bottle on your head and start a bar fight. Jose Menedez’s vocals immediately reminded me of Riley Gale’s (RIP) signature mix of thrash edge and punk passion, mirroring some Power Trip greats, like “Firing Squad” and “Waiting Around to Die”.

It comes as no surprise, then, that the production suits Discipline & Punish perfectly. Things never get as grimy or lo-fi as many of their inspirations; Menendez’s voice is crisp and clear while leaving space for a raw edge that keeps Discipline & Punish sounding immediate and decidedly trash. Every instrument has space to thrive as massive hardcore breakdowns mix perfectly with intertwining thrash riffs. The triple (yes, triple) guitar assault of Rafi Carbonell, Shawn Wallen, and Rafael Calderon weaves between criss-crossing rhythms, hooky leads, and melting faces. As a cherry on top, Janpierre Mojica’s bass sounds thick and juicy, slamming along like a lumbering beast through the warzone of sound. Brandon Thrift’s drums tie the whole thing together, with clear percussion, driving kicks, and a military-esque tinge that fits the album’s theming well.

Menendez is a high point of Discipline & Punish. His vocal phrasing and energy drive the whole album. You can’t help but bounce along as he screeches “Blood by the liters, they’re not gonna need em” on “Killing Season”, or ripping through “Front to Enemy” alongside a feature with Aaron Heard of Jesus Piece. Like a snowball in an avalanche, Menendez gains more speed, momentum, and ferocity throughout the record, barreling over everything in his path. The biggest surprise on an album full of rippers is “Smoking Mirrors,” featuring local hip-hop/hardcore duo Two-Piece. The combination of ’80s-esque record scratches and looping off-tone siren mixes perfectly with the hooky, chugging riffs and Menendez’s manic energy. Cold Steel takes an idea that should end up like oil and water, and turns it into chocolate and peanut butter.

There are so many good things to say about Discipline & Punish. The record is tight but not too short at ten tracks and thirty-five minutes, making for a listen that is all killer, no filler. It is impossible to even pick highlights between so many standouts. From the unhinged “Front to Enemy” to the crushing “Blacksmith of Damnation” or the bouncing “Killing Season”, there is something for everyone. Then there is the surprising “Smoking Mirrors”, the atmospheric “Fever Dreaming”, and the epic closing track “The Coldest Death”, with a finale that brought to mind Horrendous of all things. Cold Steel keeps you on your toes the whole time. It is an embarrassment of riches with Discipline & Punish, an album that demands you hit the play button one more time with every spin. No album is perfect, but Discipline & Punish is a hell of a start for a young band making their foray into a storied and crowded genre. Luckily, it already looks like Cold Steel doesn’t intend to rest on its laurels, with a mix of genre-bending tracks that stretch the lines of crossover thrash and hardcore. The title may call to mind authoritarian torture, but if Cold Steel is administering the pain, you are in for a good time.

Re-Buried – Flesh Mourning Review

My second discount ticket to Scum Town in one week and the third since July started, Re-Buried’s sophomore outing, Flesh Mourning, brings more gruesome death to wallow in. These cretins of the crypt left a favorable impression on Olde Steelio with their 2023 Repulsive Nature debut, courtesy of hideously inspired death vocals and crushing riff work. It felt massive, monolithic, and inevitable, and the sheer weight of it all overcame occasional gaps in their songcraft. Flesh Mourning is more of the same festering, moldy-oldey brand of death with one foot in the morgue and the other in the swamp, with vocals that sound like a dying hobo wrenching out the contents of his ulcerated stomach after a long night of on-the-cheap debauchery. And like the debut, Flesh Mourning is short, leaning toward anorexic. How can that recipe fail to earn a Michelin Star at the Slop House of Steel? Let’s poke the putridities with the pokey stick

Things open promisingly enough with vocalist Chris Pinto vomiting forth a feral hairball before the slime-flavored riffs kick in, and you get a standard yet basically effective mid-tempo death ditty without bells and whistles, but plenty of creepy atmosphere and phlegmy noises. It’s essentially Autopsycore, but lacking the jackhammer power heard at key moments on Repulsive Nature, and it feels a bit…safe. “Jagged Psyche” feels more brutish and nasty with extra vigor in the riffs, but the band seems stuck in a mid-tempo plod and struggles to kick into higher gears. This quickly becomes the story of Flesh Mourning as song after song duplicates these middling tempos with everything motoring along at a safe speed with too few bursts of speed and aggression. Worse still, the tracks aren’t as memorable as last time, and they all sound way too similar due to the consistent pacing and writing style.

“Rotted Back to Life” features some extra-heavy grooves that wake you up a bit, but it’s hard to shake the nagging feeling that this is all standard and recycled fare without an identity of its own. As things grind along in a “we have Bolt Thrower at home” manner with little variation in pacing, it falls to Chris Pinto to keep things interesting by deploying all manner of hideous sounds and monster moaning. He apes a staggering ghoul or a hospice patient in agony, and it’s impressive, but it isn’t enough to keep the material from bleeding into a big, greasy mush where one song becomes indistinguishable from the next. At just under 30 minutes, there isn’t much meat on the corpse bone, and things end with a 2-plus minute instrumental outro that’s all atmosphere and no payoff. It’s clear Re-Buried didn’t have a wealth of inspiration in the writing room and struggled to churn out a mere handful of basic, generic death ditties. That’s quite disappointing.

Chris Pinto is the star here, as he’s one of the most committed death metal vocalists out there. His weird body horror noises are wild, especially his hairball trick, which features prominently across the album. He’s a gem in search of a skilled jeweler, as the material he’s given to work with simply doesn’t deliver the knockout power his performance deserves. Paul Richards and Eddie Bingaman know all the death metal tropes and tricks and craft spot-on impersonations of classic Autopsy and Incantation fare, but so much of what they do here revolves around mid-tempo chugging and slight variations on the same kinds of swampy riffs, so it takes a hyper-intense listen to divine the differences between the individual tracks. If they wanted to create a 26-minute uni-glob effect, they accomplished it.

Flesh Mourning is a step backward from Repulsive Nature. The blunt force of the prior album is simply not here, replaced by a pornucopia of monotonous riffs and crazed cavern hollaring. It doesn’t stick or hold the attention, and while there are isolated cool/interesting bits and pieces, it’s really just off-brand Autopsy with Tomb Mold on it, and it’s devoid of songs that scream replay or demand dissemination onto playlists. It seems Re-Buried lack a potent muse and can’t craft a full-length album with consistently killer tunes, and they’re trending downwards early into their career. I hope for a speedy recovery, but the patient’s prognosis isn’t looking good.

My second entry for this #undeath #fedipaint competition is the Mortis Engine from Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

I got it when I started my Nighthaunt army, in the malignants start collecting set, but it was not playable with Nighthaunt.
Later when Soulblight Gravelords were released, it got the new keyword and was added to this faction.

It was my first attempt at using the #airbrush for something else than terrain pieces. Most of the skin has been done with the airbrush. More traditionnal techniques have been used for the other parts.

Small win of the day, the mortis engine fits into my lightbox.
I pulled out the came to take photos of Vargskyr and the mortis engine for #undeath #fedipaint.
I used focus bracketing for the first time.
I quickly checked the pictures on the computer, and using an open source focus stacking software, I could get a good result from low res unedited jpg exports.
I'll edit tomorrow (exposure, color, crop, ...).

I've done the last dry brush and put the banshees on the palanquin of the mortis engine.
Now waiting for the plastic cement to dry.

I'll pull out the camera tomorrow, hoping this will fit in my lightbox (insert doubt meme), to take the pictures for #undeath #fedipaint.

I don't think the technical level of the painting is high, but it was challenging to paint such a big model with a time constraint, and a busy schedule.

I didn't manage to do what I wanted with precise shade placement. I ended up shading the whole thing, and I will dry brush one last time tomorrow.

I also need to find the actual position of the banshees and stick them there...

I'm on the last few steps to finish painting the mortis engine for #undeath #fedipaint.
The base has received a few different color variations, and is waiting for grass tufts.
The balefire has been completed on the skeletons.
I put a second coat on the candles, and the banshees got a dry brush.

The main thing now is going to be adding more colors to the bones.

I'm getting closer to the finish line with my mortis engine.
Today, I base coated the banshees. Made the flames green and continued to work on the base.
I would like to finish the flames and the banshees tomorrow, in order to spend the rest of the week putting more contrast on the bones.
Overall, this feels more like a battle ready paint job than a competition piece... But time...

I've started the base of the mortis engine for my #undeath #fedipaint entry. Also started the flames.
I wanted to write something readable on the book the corpsemaster is using, but I would not have been able to get anything fit in High Nehekhara. So I used a word from some island country from the Far Sea east of Grand Cathay, where some vampires fled after the Vampire Wars.
