A new and detailed analysis by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences recommends that we expand the U.S. House of Representatives by 150 members and elect them through Proportional Ranked Choice Voting.
"On balance, more proportional systems provide:
better public health outcomes, across a number of measures
lower levels of economic inequality
higher satisfaction with democracy
higher levels of subjective well-being."The Academy was established during the American Revolution by John Adams and of bunch of founding father guys. They probably know a few things about #democracy.

@americanfietser.bsky.social "no taxation without representation."
I mean, everything you're saying, but this is just one of the signs becoming more obvious lately that we are in a crisis of democracy. Lack of legitimate representation in the USA is real, and has been for a long while . I think #uncapTheHouse and other #votingReform like #RCV are going to have to be part of getting us out of it.

@dstndstn @gwynnion Our voting system (first past the post #endFPTP) and various suppression of representation (#uncapTheHouse) , and voter suppression , and lack of campaign finance regulation, all work together to currently ensure no other parties can emerge.

This is also why I have long advocated for expanding the House. #UncapTheHouse
I am also convinced that we should not limit voters to a single party in primary elections. (Still one vote per race but like the general election they can split their ticket.) #OpenPrimaries
These are necessary steps to realign our government to be "of the people, by the people, and for the people" as our founders hoped.
What they designed was calculated to support human flourishing.

A small but positive step, but Blue Dog Democrats are proposing a select committee to explore multi-member congressional districts and expanding the size of the House, among other reforms.
Of course, bills to do those things, like the Fair Representation Act, have been introduced in the past. But good to see more conservative dems getting involved in the space.
Also I don't think I've ever seen a big commercial media outlet mention the cube root rule for assembly size. Nice!

"Official Acts" I imagine Biden could do after declaring this a national emergency to save Democracy.
1. Institute Ranked Choice Voting for this and all future presidential elections - some states already do, so just make all. Eliminates 3rd party spoiler effects - motivates non-voters who couldn't stomach Biden as 1st choice
2. Declare a crisis of representation: move to #uncapTheHouse in 2026.
3. Add justices and / or impeach justices from SCOTUS.

@jaredwhite Interesting! Feel like this would have more appeal if backed by actual policy ideas that stand to fix certain aspects of people feeling disenfranchised. Ranked Choice Voting plans so that Biden could say something like "make us your second choice", increasing the size of the house of representatives and/or moving to multi-member districts to give citizens better access to their reps, and more likely to have a member who actually shares their views, etc.

@JamesGleick the other thing that would fix the problem of the of the electrical college, is increasing the number of representatives to match the population gain. It was capped a hundred years ago, and should be increased dramatically. #uncapthehouse has numerous other advantages too.

Iowa, like many "red" states is actually just a gerrymandered state. At a glance, because of the relatively few number of districts, this isn't apparent, but mentally overlay these two maps and it becomes rather clear. Simply divide up the adjacent blue counties and you get a good chance at 4 red districts instead of a likely 2R-2R or even 3D-1R as would be merited by the way population votes.

@georgetakei absolutely, do not vote for fascism, but also we know some of what makes people vote that way, and we are not doing enough to address the failings of our current democracy which is why we are in legitimate danger of having a dictator being elected. we need better voting systems (like #RCV), and more representatives (#uncapTheHouse), and to #endthefillibuster to address some of the top reasons so many have so little faith in government

@RealJournalism not to make excuses for bad GOP behavior, but drawing districts where some voters don't lose out on representation is actually hard when the number of representatives doesn't grow with the population. #uncapTheHouse. 435 is too few by far

@qkslvrwolf not to diminish the right's anti-voter anti democracy shenanigans, but can't help but think how soooo much of this would be side-stepped by just having a lot more districts. #uncapTheHouse of representatives. 435 is too few by far, and big districts in big states are far to easy to gerrymander even when following the in place rules against gerrymandering

I often feel disheartened by the "contact your representatives" line. They literally have ignored every bit of contacting I have ever done. They have zero incentive to listen.
Also we would have over 1,300 representatives if we had the same person-to-representative ratio that we had in the House before we capped it in 1929.

@dankennedy_nu @jbouie "Yet anti-democratic institutions persist, including the Senate, the Electoral College and, as a consequence, the Supreme Court."
The judiciary is the least democratic branch: a compound result of gerrymanders multiplied
EC * Senate = SCOTUS
At least congressional districts have approximately equivalent populations, tho 'partisan' packed and cracked.

@taatm @Daojoan remove the filibuster, yes, another major thing that helps enable minority control rather than majority control is the arbitrary restriction on the number of representatives in the House. Lifting that could fix a lot of what is broken with that body AND make a lot of the problems with the EC go away too. #uncapthehouse

@eARCwelder That is is wild.
It is also wild how few people talk about how uncapping the size of the House of Representatives, a relatively easy thing politically, compared to abolishing the EC, would severely diminish the negative impacts of the EC. #uncapTheHouse has multiple other upsides as well

It would be much harder for Republicans to gerrymander Alabama's voting map if the individual districts were smaller. Congress should pass a law to #UncapTheHouse and allow the House to grow, in proportion to population, as it did before the Permanent Apportionment Act became law in 1929.
The "Cube Root Rule" should be used to determine the number of House members. (i.e. House size should equal the cube root of the US population after each census.)

It is time that we expand the number of members of the House of Representatives.

The House was supposed to grow with population. It didn’t. Let’s fix that.
