The family of a 26 year old Indonesian man from South Sulawesi convicted of sexual harassment against a Lebanese woman during umrah in Saudi Arabia are pleading to President Joko Widodo to help him avoid or reduce the two year jail time.
The family are adamant that the man is not guilty of the charge despite his own initial confession –which he later recanted– two witnesses, and a security camera footage presented during the trial. They claimed he didn’t understand what was being asked of him which lead him to give an inaccurate confession under stress. They also claimed that they were never shown any visual evidence claimed to have been used during the trial and that he was beaten during detention.
The Indonesian government has filed a note of protest to the Saudi government as the Saudis failed to formally inform the Indonesian government that a citizen was being charged with a crime.
