A thought-provoking and wide-ranging talk yesterday by Andy Wickert, University of Minnesota.
His group has tracked changes in drainage patterns during the final deglaciation of Minnesota (~11 thousand years ago) to changes in erosion rates since the advent of mechanical agriculture.

Johnny's Seeds has these tips (they have lots of good gardening advice).
"Transplant - Dill can be started indoors in containers or cell trays. Sow 3-5 seeds per cell. Transplant out using 2-4" spacing in rows at least 4" apart."
I also saw that "Dill does not transplant easily," from the #UMN Cooperative Extension website. So best to plant them in bigger pots to begin with.

I was glad to see Harvard take a stand against the Trump administration, and am now very happy to see so many colleges and universities sign on to this statement about academic freedom:
https://www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-call-for-constructive-engagement
In particular, I'm happy to see several institutions I've worked for or attended there: the University of Wisconsin -- Madison; the University of Puget Sound, and my upcoming Macalester College.
(Hey, University of Minnesota, my PhD institution: you should sign too!)

Veuve was one of the first Allied officers to reach the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After the end of WW2, René Veuve adopted his codename "Joyeuse" as his surname. He worked as an emergency & trauma surgeon at the Mayo Clinic while also pursuing a master's degree in surgery at the University of Minnesota. He was a co-founder of the American Trauma Society. He died June 12, 2012 (aged 92) in Lake Placid, New York. (4/4)

#UMN PhD student was expelled for apparently using #AI (ChatGPT, specifically) to #cheat on his comps exam. He is suing the uni, naturally.
These days, it is very easy for the students to cheat and for the professors to catch, with both camps wielding AI. Accidental contamination is inevitable, since millions of students are permitted to use AI to "check the grammar" of their writings. Also, when both the AI and the humans learn from the same tired sources, there is bound to be some overlap in the work product. On the other hand, if the writing is statistically too close to the generated text, there is strong presumption of cheating. The rebuttal, of course, is that AI could well have learned the subject from the older publications of the very author who is now being accused of cheating.🤦♂️
A simple, effective way an #academic can shield himself against accusations of impropriety is to make a recordation, in the form of timestamped, longhand #notes, of the complete research history.
Regardless of the facts and the outcome of this case, #AcademicDoping by AI is here to stay. Sad. Or, is it?🤷

I fully support #umn and the board of regents on this vote.
As an alumni and the father of one UMN student and one UMN graduate, this vote makes me proud to be associated with the University of Minnesota. https://www.mprnews.org/story/2024/08/27/u-of-m-votes-against-israel-divestment-and-future-divestment-proposals

Gotta soak up those wins!
With some luck more campuses will be able to holdout. First step towards forcing these administrations into negotiating divestment.

UMN has been going just as hard as other campuses this week. On the 23rd around 1000 students gathered after organizers were arrested attempting to establish their first encampment.
Since then the students have KEPT coming back. Weathering constant police repression.

Students at the University of Minnesota report being in an hours long standoff with riot cops. As an hour ago the cops gave up.
This was the students 4th attempt to build an encampment and they seem pretty stoked to have outlasted the cops tonight!

This is an interesting but distressing interview that highlights the anti-#Palestinian pro-#Israel pro-#Zionist bias of #UMN administration. If not biased then cowardly capitulation to outside (and some inside) forces. A strong candidate for #DEI associate dean describes their unfair treatment and toxic atmosphere for Palestinian students and their allies. Especially upsetting for us #Minnesota people, since this is our premier public university.

@kylewritescode Good morning Kyle.
I already had a productive morning. I finally figured out how to let my hybrid #Apptainer #OpenMPI container for our NASA code talk to #UKY's #HPC cluster’s InfiniBand backend. Now the code scales beautifully. Next up, getting it to run on our collaborators’ cluster at #UMN.
I think I’ll have my coffee now.
