All of the faculty in my department at #UMassAmherst got some of the sycophantic AI-generated phishing spam. I've been seeing this stuff for so long, I didn't think much about it. But for most of the faculty it's something new. Ugh.

The #UMassAmherst Associate Provost for Faculty Development came to my house to bring me lunch and deliver a plaque for my Delphi Leadership Award. We had a nice chat in my tent over Indian food. I was very gratified to receive this award in recognition of my service to non-tenure-track faculty.

Anyone on fedi a student or faculty member at UMass Amherst and know why we're seeing an unexpected influx of sign-up requests yesterday and today from UMass IPs using umass.edu emails?
If these are legit sign-up requests from folks dipping their toe into fedi for the first time, that's great! We've been unable to confirm this though, as none of them have filled out the 'reasons for joining' box with relevant info, nor responded to follow-up emails from our official support account.

After a marathon 4.25 hour meeting, the #UMassAmherst faculty voted to express no confidence in the Chancellor. He has expressed his recognition that he needs to work to rebuild trust. There's no easy path forward, but this seems like a positive start.

There has been a General Faculty Meeting only one other time in my memory during my 28-year career at #UMassAmherst which was when Jack Wilson, the President of the UMass system, fired John Lombardi, the Chancellor at UMass Amherst, and then tried to establish himself as both President AND Chancellor to advance his wackadoodle "One University" plan, that would have tried to pretend that all of the UMass campuses were just one entity, as a way to game the university rankings. He backed down.
