Umarell is the Italian word for retired men who spend their time watching, and sometimes commenting on, construction sites or roadwork.
The word originated in Bologna and in the local dialect umarèl means “little man”. It was coined in 2005 by writer Danilo Masotti.

"Umarell are men of retirement age who spend their time watching construction sites, especially roadworks – stereotypically with hands clasped behind their back and offering unwanted advice to the workers. Its literal meaning is "little man" (also umaréin). The term is employed as lighthearted mockery or self-deprecation."
