Okay so I have a brand new laptop with an AMD CPU and 32 GiB of RAM; I've set the UMA buffer size for the integrated graphics to 2GiB in the BIOS and Fedora reports that I have 29 GiB of memory available: where has that one gig I'm missing gone to??
Also I don't really understand why it is necessary to reserve such a huge, fixed chunck of RAM (beyond what's needed for the actual framebuffer) for use by a UMA iGPU?
In the olden days, when you'd used up all of the fast onboard VRAM on a dedicated card, you'd then start using up system RAM to stream textures from. That was the whole promise of a dedicate bus like AGP.
Of course even back then, this was far too slow for being useful in any real capacity, and I can only assume this isn't any better nowadays, but on a system with Unified Memory Architecture graphics, where the system RAM's bandwidth is as good as you're going to get, it should be the case that using a dynamically allocated chunk of memory would offer perfectly consistent performances, shouldn't it? Maybe it's so that the iGPU can ensure it only ever comes from actual RAM (and not from swap), which would otherwise be hard to do by requesting virtual memory from the OS (but then it would only be potentially slower, not lead to a crash or anything)?
At any rate, it feels extremely wasteful to have to set aside from 1 to 8 GiB of RAM in the BIOS that you will never use until you start a game (and will no longer need when you stop it). -
