  8. Dear food industry, please stop trying to sell me #ultraprocessed #overpackaged guff + start turning your brilliant minds to real problems: a delicious #vegan #plantbased cheese that doesn't cost the earth available at my local supermarket would do for starters ?

  9. In much the same way we want useful + #privacy focused, secure software, but the techbros keep delivering insecure #AI focused insecure nightmares, I wish the food industry would stop trying to sell us #ultraprocessed #overpackaged and mostly marketing driven guff and start turning their brilliant minds to real problems.

Why can't I have a delicious #vegan #plantbased cheese that doesn't cost the earth available at my local supermarket?

It's as if the brightest minds of each generation get turned to the wrong things - like ever more sophisticated ways to keep scrolling, or physics graduates who became quants and helped cause the financial crisis...

  10. (2/3) … while #plantbased alternatives are linked to reduced risk. The question ‘Are all #ultraprocessed foods bad?’ requires a more nuanced answer. The broad categorisation of #UPFs fails to capture important distinctions. The role of UPFs in #foodsecurity, affordability… doi.org/10.1017/S002...

  11. #UK government dropped #health push after lobbying by ultra-processed food firms

Govt legal guidance urging retailers to offer consumers deals & discounts on minimally processed and #nutritious food was dropped after lobbying campaign by world’s biggest ultra-processed food firms

Govt wasn’t mandating anything. Just a recommendation for retailers to offer markdowns, special & discounts on actual (not #UltraProcessed) #food

  12. 70% of #American food is #ultra-processed — the #highest #rate in the #developed #world. The average adult in the U.S. consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day. That’s over 25 kg of pure sugar per year— per person.

  14. Not all #ultraprocessed food (UPF) is linked to adverse #health outcomes, e.g. #plantbased meat & #dairy alternatives can be more beneficial than their animal-based counterparts and help lowering the dietary animal to plant #protein ratio. The concept of #UPFs paints with too broad a brush, is insufficiently nuanced to guide food purchasing decisions, and may distract #consumers from focusing on the importance of nutrient content: doi.org/10.1111/1750-3841.7003 #NOVA #nutrition #diets #milk #meat

  15. You’re being lied to about “ultra-processed” foods.

“Vegan fake meats linked to heart disease, early death,” the New York Post declared.

There was just one problem: The narrative was totally fake.

Plant-based meats were virtually absent from the study: Just 0.2 percent of calories across the sample came from meat alternatives. People were eating cookies and cake.

  16. Why are #ultraprocessed #foods popular?
Is it that they're often #cheaper, already portion sized (no half an onion & odd #herbs to use up) & faster to #prepare?
    People are #time, #energy & #money deprived. #Healthy #eating takes more #planning, often #costs more & you need to be #home to #cook (not doing 2 #jobs).
    I suspect #healthyeating is now a privilege & easier if you already know how to #cookfromscratch. I'm lucky I don't need to #eat #readymeals

  17. Red #meat products have more calories, fat & salt than #meatless alternatives. While rated as ultra-processed food, alternatives can provide #diets containing fewer nutrients-to-limit (#salt, saturated fat); not all #ultraprocessed food is unhealthy: doi.org/10.1017/S1368980023001 (1/2)

  18. #Ultraprocessed food (UFP) is a fundamentally muddled concept and the #evidence that links UPF with adverse #health outcomes is uncertain; some #UPF is actually good for our health (e.g. #fibres in bread & cereal): theguardian.com/commentisfree/ #nutrition #diets (1/3)
