Also I had gone looking for the place in the updater where you can choose mirrors and wait until the system pings them all and determines the fastest. Another cool thing I didn’t know about #Fedora is this MirrorMaster technology or whatever they call it - which automatically pings mirrors and selects the closest each time you run a dnf. Useful. Me likee. Just have to use fastestmirror=True in /etc/dnf/dnf.conf.

Been toying with different distros on the Surface Pro 8 the last few days. I'll say that KDE Plasma seems to be my favorite environment for touch, after customizing the UI and gestures. I installed Ultramarine 41 and the linux-surface kernel and it's been pretty smooth.

I knew things were going to "go south" (turn out ugly), 4 weeks ago (last month), and posted about our falling out (lack of progress, and general disrespect). Before that, I was very much promoting Ultramarine Linux and the people behind it.

Even after all that, I kept pointing to my old post about how I thought Ultramarine Linux, was a better alternative for newbies, when compared to Linux Mint. See my, why I don't recommend Linux Mint for newbies, post.

I had held out hope, things would turn around. Sadly, no.

There are times, when I don't understand people. - At all.

There were people who were trash talking Ultramarine Linux, trolling the development, and here I was trying to be a supporter. "Random" could bitch, complain, and moan, but if I asked, "hey guys, what's up" I got the "give it a rest" attitude.

You look at the Fediverse, and until recently, I spoke more about Ultramarine Linux, than the development did. I was very positive, claiming how great the operating system was for newbies. My post history, alone, should speak for itself.

Sometimes, good intentions, good deeds, don't yield good results. This is one of those times, and I am disappointed in Ultramarine Linux.

I kept being told, that we would see v41 of Ultramarine Linux, before Fedora 42. They finally released v41 on the same day as v42 was release.

I kept wanting to help test whatever they wanted to be tested or fund, whatever they wanted to be funded - That is my strong suite. They went out of their way to thank everyone (naming people) who helped, including the people who donated as little as 5 bucks a month. I spent over 200 buck registering and securing Ultramarine and Frya Labs, Domain Names, and was not mention, once.

Well, those domains are going to get shut down.

Someone told me Ultramarine Linux was looking to work with Universal Blue.

Well, that's a dumb idea. There have been 4 other developments that tried to work with Universal Blue, but UB sort of help kill off their development. UB is no bodies friend. They'll have you working for them with nothing in return, pretty quickly.

I am really upset (mix if disappointment, sad, a little angry) with Ultramarine Linux.

They've released a solid distro release since Fedora v34 or v35. They've been going strong for years, and then "poof".

Every time, there is finally a good distro for newbie, the development geeks out. This is why there is no Year of The Linux Desktop. Your Grandma is not going to learn the terminal, and if she does, it will be because she first had that Windows-like experience, the same why some Windows users eventually learned Microsoft PowerShell.

Linux needs a dumb pipe distro. Something so point and click easy, that if I themed it like Windows or Apple, the newbie would not know the difference. Ironically, there has been several such type of distros. But they all "geek out" and lose themselves.

NO, we did not need you to waste time on making your own hardware (that didn't go anywhere, did it?). No, most people are not trying to flash a Chromebook device (it is a niche user base). No, you did not need to focus on ARM64 support (also still a niche user base). All this would not have been a problem, if you did not try to start all of this at the same time, while also trying to develop a new installer.

As I said, they "geeked out" and likely burned out. Time and resource management is not something Linux developers are good at. Because I see this happen with so many promising developments.
