The UK has to unshackle itself from the USA.

Doing so will meet resistance from some UK diplomats and civil servants and from significant groups of capitalists.

Although there are all sorts of problems with the French proposal of "strategic autonomy" for Europe, it remains the only feasible alternative to the current dangerous and degrading dependence on the US.

  8. Although I know it's all an attempt to distract attention from the Epstein files and unpopular measures in general, I watched some of Donald Trump's sick racist fantasy video.

That repugnant spectacle prompted me to think again about US-UK relations.

The UK, as a country with pretensions to democracy and decency, must develop a long term strategy for freeing itself from its dependency on the USA.

It's not just the video, or the tariffs, or the arbitrary arrests, or the erosion of free speech, or the international bullying, or the facilitation of environmental destruction, or the boost to corporate power and oligarchy...it's not just Donald Trump the individual -- it's the political system that has allowed such an individual to rise to power in the first place.

As I've said before, I don't want this call for disentanglement to be confused with a visceral hatred of all things American, but we've got to think about defence, security, and the UK's international relations in the long term and work out how to unshackle ourselves from this system.

Easier said than done of course, but it never will be done if we do not first admit that it must be done.
