The UK has to unshackle itself from the USA.

Doing so will meet resistance from some UK diplomats and civil servants and from significant groups of capitalists.

Although there are all sorts of problems with the French proposal of "strategic autonomy" for Europe, it remains the only feasible alternative to the current dangerous and degrading dependence on the US.

  5. Although I know it's all an attempt to distract attention from the Epstein files and unpopular measures in general, I watched some of Donald Trump's sick racist fantasy video.

That repugnant spectacle prompted me to think again about US-UK relations.

The UK, as a country with pretensions to democracy and decency, must develop a long term strategy for freeing itself from its dependency on the USA.

It's not just the video, or the tariffs, or the arbitrary arrests, or the erosion of free speech, or the international bullying, or the facilitation of environmental destruction, or the boost to corporate power and oligarchy...it's not just Donald Trump the individual -- it's the political system that has allowed such an individual to rise to power in the first place.

As I've said before, I don't want this call for disentanglement to be confused with a visceral hatred of all things American, but we've got to think about defence, security, and the UK's international relations in the long term and work out how to unshackle ourselves from this system.

Easier said than done of course, but it never will be done if we do not first admit that it must be done.

  7. The UK-US trade deal is being hailed as "historic," but with most UK goods still facing a 10% tariff, is it truly a win? Let's discuss the real impact on our economy.

  9. Although Lib Dems going through the lobbies with the Tories to support austerity is hardly ancient history, credit where credit is due - Davey's approach would be so much better than Starmer's attempts to ingratiate himself with Trump.

  11. I'm sorry, but I cannot resist the temptation to repeat what I wrote yesterday:

    >>I've long wished that the UK would align more with Europe, but the British capacity for self-deception when it comes to UK-US relations is massive.<<

  13. I don't want to see "Death to America" rallies in Trafalgar Square, nor do I want to see dislike of US policies and US society in general translated into hostility to ordinary US citizens; my children are Americans, and I don't want them to be hurt, abused, or attacked.

What I do want, however, is a clear eyed recognition by the Labour government that the future of the UK lies in Europe, that the values and vision of social democracy are distant from those of either of the major parties in the USA, and that to talk of the "special relationship" not only fosters an illusion but also traps us in an inequitable and dangerous alliance.

Given the ongoing threat of Russia, we are not in a position to simply break off with the Americans tomorrow. What we must do, however, is to start working with other willing and able European countries to establish credible European strategic autonomy.

  15. William Keegan rightly criticized these words from Mandelson as kowtowing to Trump.

The UK needs to keep its relations with the USA diplomatically correct but without a trace of submissiveness, and preferably with all talk of "the special relationship" excised.

One measure the UK should take is to shelve plans for a royal visit to the USA while Trump is in power. The UK government should do this for these reasons:

    - It's bad for the UK internationally to be seen as sucking up to Trump.

    - It's bad for the UK domestically to let Trump host the King because it erodes our self-respect, fuels the power of hostile external actors like Musk, and gives aid and comfort to internal right wing wreckers like Reform UK.

Mandelson's having to eat his words should also remind us what a bad idea it has been to appoint a political celebrity with a record of controversial remarks rather than a professional diplomat to the ambassadorial post in Washington.
