After a 1hr switchover, multiple delays and cancellations, some of which were planned, others we watched happen in real time. My train arrived.
It's 35C today, another record breaking heatwave for England, one of the many.
This train has no aircon. Fedizens, it is baking in here.
Home ETA 11PM
I want a shower.
The Conductor is checking tickets and just informed a lady she's going the wrong way, so it could be worse.

Finally arrived in London, after one of the worst train journeys I’ve had in years 😤☹️
Our train network *really* needs more investment.

Anyway, nice train. An evolution, not a revolution. Comfortable seats and smells less like it's been through 20+ years of hauling Plymouth to Aberdeen.

Just put out my first indie iPhone app - for UK train commuters.
An app you can just open it and see the next fastest train home or to work, along with the platform number. Supports iPhone widgets and Apple Watch complications.
No clutter, no ticket upsells, or advertising. And it's fast!
I might be the only customer, but putting it out there in case it fills a gap for other people too.

If you're stuck with the Manchester Piccadilly #UKTrains madness this week, I definitely recommend Citymapper! Trainline and the official train apps all had way worse routes, and didn't even show the better Citymapper alternatives as an option. Better even when it makes you do routes like this 🥲

UK folks, is there a good app JUST for tracking a particular train journey that might include multiple changes?
I currently use the Trainline app for this. I like it for the journey tracker because it's great for showing when a train is running late, how long I'll have to change trains, if I'm going to miss a change, stuff like that.
However, I would like to ditch Trainline, because it's asking for my age to work out how much to charge me for tickets and I literally never use it to buy tickets!
Edit: Sorry for the misunderstanding - it's not just that I don't want to enter my age, but that's kind of a last-straw illustration that the app is not as suited to my needs as I'd like. So, just lying about my age HAS already occurred to me, and also I would like an app that focuses on journey tracking and not buying tickets.

I am on a #UKTrains and none of us know where it's going 😂😂😂 This should be fun. I have just determined that it is not, in fact, going miles out of the way to Bolton as I feared

Q: I have an off-peak return ticket with a long connection time. Can I leave the station (in search of a good coffee) and re-enter the ticket barriers?

I can't wait for them to improve the train line to Leefs (sic) from #Sheffield, 'cos getting to and from Leeds has been a right pain in the arse. "Leefs leafs the way" #uktrains

Nice new Class 701 trains on #southwesternrailway now on the Reading - Waterloo services.
Shame about the deafening squeaking noises from in/under the carriages when moving. Changed to a different carriage but it's only a little better. Still, just an hour with what sounds worse than chalk on a blackboard for accompaniment.

We are currently cruising at around 1900ppm CO2.

"The UK’s transport system is unjust. At the individual level, car use isn’t a choice for many, but the consequence of a system that renders them reliant on cars to function. This leaves millions in effective poverty because they have no choice but to own a car"

Forget leaves on the line... now dry weather in the Fens is blamed for rail delays
https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/25559334.rail-bosses-say-dry-weather-blame-rail-delays/Let's not mention that all those examples of more extreme weather are linked to climate change, eh, EDP? If we pretend it isn't happening, it might go away(!)

Greater Anglia named the best train provider in the country
https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/25443671.greater-anglia-named-best-train-provider-uk/"Greater Anglia has been named as the most reliable train provider in the country, beating out countless other services."
I'm pretty sure someone numerate could count them! #badjournalism #ukTrains

I knew the people behind #RealTimeTrains must be nerds, but I didn't expect them to slip an #XKCD reference into the website footer.

@quixoticgeek @EndlessMason @iris some #uktrains trialled switching to all-single pricing, London KX-Edinburgh as one, but of course they couldn't resist messing with the time restrictions and sneak through a price increase, so people switched to buying London-Finsbury Park returns which require a change from KX to St Pancras (which they never took)

@jon #Gemini have been in the UK press this week promoting a Stratford-Ebbsfleet-Europe competitor to #Eurostar again. Difficult to see how they can finish/reverse/start at #Stratford without major track works, running empty into #StPancras and back out, or resignalling the Camden Road ramp to enable HS1-only stock on it. Then there's the problem of fitting border posts into Stratford's constrained pre-Brexit station space.

Why is the microphone used by the train manager so bad on the Class 800 GWR train?
It isn't the speakers. The automated announcements are crystal clear. But as soon as a real person talks, it's like they're underwater and sucking a gobstopper.

Just need to find the vacation time to do a couple of these.

@respros
I'm no expert but I do use Thameslink & always assume the delays are so common because every train had done a long rural haul (with scope for cumulative trouble) before even leaving central LOndon.
Services terminating/starting in London have a big advantage as they can start on time.

Something must be going very wrong at St Albans. In theory it has an excellent one-stop service to St Pancras.
