I've been meaning to go to the Congleton Jazz & Blues Festival for a few years now. As we have nothing else planned for this Bank Holiday weekend, then 2026 is the year.
It's not too far away from us - about 50km / 30 miles as the crow flies. And I can drive there in 45 minutes even without using the motorway.
But I thought it might be nice to leave the car at home. I've just checked the trains: my options are either a 1½ hour journey via Stoke, with 2 changes, or I can get that down to 1 change via Manchester but then it's a 1¾ hour journey. Each way.
It would also cost almost £50 for the pair of us. So sadly I think I'll be driving. At least it's an EV.

CW: Train grumbles
UK trains are literally the worse I have ever taken in Europe. They have sent five carriages for a journey from Glasgow to Plymouth. Five. For a journey down most of the country’s length. Fuck’s sake.

Sometimes, upgrading to First Class is such a no-brainer. Was £6.50 more per person per leg – Loughborough⇹London – and they bring you food and drink, and the seats are more comfy. Just the food and drink alone would cost more.

Thanks to train control, who just held the 20 late 1030 Edinburgh-Kings Cross in a Peterborough loop, so that all of us on the 1100 could hold time. Not sure why they were late, they started losing time at Durham and then they started tripping over other trains' pathing. #UKTrains

It's 35C today, another record breaking heatwave for England, one of the many.
This train has no aircon. Fedizens, it is baking in here.
