  1. Good to see the government has upgraded its offer, but a 5% increase—less than half the rate of inflation in the last year alone—is desultory and hardly begins to address the 35% real-terms fall in #NHS wages since the Tories came to power. #UKStrikes #ToryBritain #SaveOurNHS bbc.co.uk/news/health-65450929

  2. Is there anyone in the UK who is not on strike at the moment, and if not, why not? #UKstrikes

  3. "In my first role as a newly qualified nurse in England last year, I didn’t work a single shift where there were enough nurses on duty. Even when I wasn’t on shift, I knew there were never enough nurses. Every day, the group chat for my ward would light up with requests for people to come in on their days off."

  4. The LSE studied the link between public sector pay rises and inflation... the reality is, there isn't a link. Jeremy Hunt is simply wrong. Link to LSE post in next Toot.

  6. Strike on Shrove Tuesday - a poem I wrote the other year.

This one goes out to all workers fighting and sacrificing to make things less shit.

  7. Coordinated strikes on 15-16 March, which coincide with Budget Day, can help galvanise and the ongoing strike wave. But individual unions must also seek ways to intensify the impact of their strikes.

  8. I'm on #strike today.

As an early career researcher on a fixed term contract, I understand why some colleagues might make a different choice, feeling that a lost day of work hurts their career personally more than it makes a statement to the university.

I think that's a bit backwards, though--when we stand together and make genuine sacrifices, that signals to our employers just now serious we are.

And don't you hope your colleagues at the next university you work at are fighting to improve conditions there as well?

#HigherEducation and #research is under attack in the UK (not to mention the US and elsewhere), and the only way we persuade governments and (certain) administrators who keep trying to squeeze more blood from the stone is to leverage the right to withdraw our labor to say #EnoughIsEnough.

We need real terms pay to stop falling. We need the same for our friends in the healthcare & rail sectors. We need the same for everyone.

  11. Apart from anything else, the wave of UK strike action in response to real-terms pay cuts shows that the system of government-appointed pay bodies is not fit for purpose. It should transition to a collective bargaining model as soon as is practically possible. #UKstrikes

  12. Trying to plan #train travel to UK in February (because #FlyingLess).
Anyone have any idea if #RMT #RailStrikes have been scheduled for February yet and where I might find information - not getting much on a #FWSE?

Also #UKBorderForce strikes? Any further details?

Fully vaccinated against everything so hoping to avoid encounter with #UKNursesStrike... 😬

  13. I can't see #UKStrikes being resolved until after the anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion.

Reason being inflation will naturally fall once we get past that point in time.

In turn, govt will have something to point to along the lines of "they're demanding x% but inflation is only 3%!"

So they will refuse to negotiate until the inflationary picture is different. Ignoring that prices will remain higher.
