  5. The funniest thing I have seen this morning at a time with little to laugh at.

A German company is buying the Torygraph. I suspect that they have plans to harness a hitherto unused source of renewables, the hatred of the papers readership, dynamos attached to the spinning coffins.

I suspect Rothermere is disappointed that he will not be able to get headlines in both papers ‘Hurrah for the Blackshirts’

  6. The UK TV Licence debate is heating up again, and the BBC’s YouTube partnership makes it even messier. If BBC content is made for YouTube audiences first, what does that do to the licence fee argument and the idea of a universal public service broadcaster?

    Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXnlE5N1g5s

Also, a useful clarification for people arguing in the replies: you do not need a TV Licence for on-demand YouTube videos, but you do need one to watch live TV on YouTube.

I don't think what Mark Urban says here can simply be dismissed, but he is hardly giving us the whole picture. He doesn't pay much attention to the "impartiality" that gave such a boost to Brexit and Farage.

I would like to watch this documentary, but because I don't live in the UK, I can't without using a VPN and making a false declaration about my place of residence and holding of a UK television licence, which I am not willing to do.

I have no illusions about the BBC. I have just been reading David Caute's "Red List: MI5 and British Intellectuals in the Twentieth Century", and the title of the fourteenth chapter, 'The BBC Toes the Line', neatly summarizes the history of the Beeb buckling under government pressure with regard to "subversives". I am also aware that but for the BBC's perversely mistaken interpretation of "impartiality", Nigel Farage would be just another bad breathed pub bore. I could go on too about the deeper levels of the BBC's ideological involvement in the maintenance of British capitalism.

Yet for all its faults, I still believe in the value of a media corporation that is neither a department of state propaganda, nor an enterprise primarily organized to sell advertising, nor the megaphone of a right wing moghul. In addition, I esteem the BBC's mission to not only inform and educate but to entertain as well; this aspect of its mission, as well as its having the budget and the means to create, as opposed to just platform, original mass market material distinguishes the BBC from niche "public service" organizations like the USA's PBS and NPR.

I wish UK governments could be more supportive of the BBC and more imaginative in how they think of the corporation's financing and its global role. I doubt that there are many in the BBC who are actually thrilled about the imposition of charges on US visitors to bbc.com/news and the blocking of iPlayer content beyond the UK, but the difficulty of raising the licence fee and the ugly realities of global advertising and media markets probably leave the BBC thinking they have no alternative.

In fact, the UK government could intervene. First, though, they would have to make a commitment to the BBC's mission as not just national but global too. Via the BBC, the UK can provide the world with a global public good - a free to access source of information, education, and entertainment, and, as an alternative to Fox and RT style media, a continuing model for other broadcasting and media organizations.

Then come the tricky part: how to pay for such a lofty vision to be made real?
My guess it would be a matter of supplementing rather than replacing the BBC's current sources of revenue. Perhaps a quango could be established to provide the independent assessment, administration, and collection of a levy on information transmission in the UK...

Or am I just pipe dreaming?

  13. As far as I understand the affair, Angela Rayner got into a muddle about a complex personal tax issue and as a result of this confusion made a statement that was not true. The confusion seems to have arisen in connection with her attempting to provide for her disabled son.

Not great, but I can't get worked up about it.

What I do get worked up about is the long running campaign waged by the the Telegraph and the Mail to hound Rayner out of office.

These loathsome right wing rags cannot abide the thought of a decidedly unOxbridge, left wing, working class woman being in a position of power.

  14. Time to do a #Custerfuchs about people who have and act on personal narratives which are based around torture & murder of "others" and how the British media and establishment are currently engaging in reinforcing those narratives by projecting them onto "asylum seekers".

In a law court, knowledge that someone has those opinions would be considered evidence of "malice aforethought" or "premeditation".
Disseminating those opinions would be considered incitement and not "legitimate complaints" or "legitimate political discourse".

The essay is going to need a clever title.
    Something like
    "Nigel Farage is planning Genocide"
    or something like that.

  16. CW: trans rights, public opinion, UK

With America as a yardstick,* the UK is doing ok on trans rights.

But America right now is a terrible yardstick for human rights. 😳

The results of YouGov’s December opinion poll on trans rights are fairly depressing, suggesting that the incessant demonisation of trans people in the UK media is having an effect across all demographics:

    yougov.co.uk/politics/articles

It’s a bit of a downer when most people in your country want to restrict your rights. 😔

Of four age groups, only 18–24-year-olds think I should be allowed to use a women’s toilet – or have GRS or HRT on the NHS.

And no demographic thinks I should be allowed to participate in a women’s sporting event. To be fair, people tried their best not to include me in their teams throughout school, so nothing’s changed here. 😉

Incidentally, what do people think of YouGov polling the public to ask about minority rights, especially using yes/no questions that suggest there’s a debate to be had, and that both options are equally reasonable? 🤷🏻‍♀️

*I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a yardstick. We only had metre sticks in my primary school.
