  1. I made myself leave the house today to go to the exhibit about Ursula K. Le Guin’s life, A Larger Reality. It is only open for another day and I really don’t want to miss it. If you’re in Portland and are fee tomorrow, try to make it. It’s free, they suggest a donation of $15.

You had the opportunity to use UKL’s typewriter! The catch is that you have to set up to use a carbon copy sheet! This allows the executor of UKL’s literary estate, her son Theo Downes-Le Guin, to retain a copy of everything that’s written using his Mother’s typewriter. This feels fair.

This was the first typewriter she purchased new, using the advance from selling Rocannon’s World in 1966. It is sitting in a framed space that is the same dimensions of her writing room in her home on Thurman Street in NW Portland. There is a looping video projected on the wall, giving you UKL’s view of Mt. St. Helens (on a clear day).

The typewriter is very loud! Touch-typing on it created quite a noise and few folks gave me surprised looks! I needed to stand to have enough strength to type and my hands were not amused, but would do again.

I thought about asking you to join me, Portland friends, but trying to add anything beyond getting myself there felt too hard.
