The whole argument that education and in particular universities don't train young people with employable skills is disingenuous as it completely ignores degrees that are accredited by professional bodies.

I'm all for treating technical routes on par with higher education, but I find it jarring that so many Brits say "uni isn't for everyone"...tbh, I believe higher education is a human right so we should be thinking about different ways to fund Unis so that anyone who wants a higher education can get it.
...because at this rate, HE is going to become a privilege for the wealthy.

HSE investigation concludes that the University of Birmingham doesn't have appropriate arrangements in place to manage workplace stress and was unable to demonstrate that it can manage the risks associated with excessive workload.
I'm left wondering how unique Birmingham is and how other Universities would fare in a similar investigation.

The UK HE financial crisis continues to bite down hard. I can see that Uni of Essex still employed "more than 2,644 academic, research, senior support and general support staff", so they are now experiencing what places like London Met have had to do for at least a decade. Many, many good people have lost jobs. Some have kept jobs when frankly they should not have. The game of academic FTE is really terrible imho.

Petition request, if you can. Kiddo started a Drama degree at #UALCSM in September, and their main teaching space, the Platform Theatre, is at risk. It seems that senior management have decided to get rid of the Theatre space, without notifying the incoming students.

...I'm not sure. It probably depends on what you are expecting from a degree and what that enables you to do. That's subject- and sector-dependent.
Is university education worth it?
I think it is. Education is about getting equipped with the ability to approach problems through processing information and critical thinking.

UK HE may now auto-increase fees in line 'with inflation'. At the same time their 'Digital Transformation' is all out AI with hardly any critical analysis of *why* or *how* or *how much* or *is it any good* measurement. Its mass techpolitik brainrot/ indoctrination. In fact, academic staff lost their jobs a long time ago to edtech and 'learning analytics'. We/they all became data shufflers to build their performance KPI and ROI.

I teach zoology at university and I come across people (not my students but working people) who don’t see the value in zoology.
Firstly I don’t really understand why they’d think that…zoology is the animal side of ecology, so understanding animals is pretty important if you want to protect biodiversity.
Secondly, I’m kind of tired of this expectation that subject experts and teachers are the ones that need to argue against such attacks based either on ignorance or bad faith.
