“All staff in our school apart from two courses were made redundant – and were offered the chance to reapply for our job, with interviews, for a worse salary, no pension and less holiday.” #ukhe

Here @jburnmurdoch argues that the economic benefit of going to University is all about the economy, not about the education provided by the University

"the graduate earnings premium — and graduate salaries more broadly — are not really telling us about the innate value of studying a particular subject at a particular institution. Instead, they are telling us about the value of those qualifications in a particular economy at a particular point in time."

#UKHE folks, how are you dealing with all this grant submission pause stuff that's going on? I'm feeling increasingly despondent about my chances of getting anything and really feeling like it might not even be worth bothering given pauses in UKRI, overloaded charities, etc. Anyone else? #UKAcademia

HSE investigation concludes that the University of Birmingham doesn't have appropriate arrangements in place to manage workplace stress and was unable to demonstrate that it can manage the risks associated with excessive workload.
I'm left wondering how unique Birmingham is and how other Universities would fare in a similar investigation.

The UK HE financial crisis continues to bite down hard. I can see that Uni of Essex still employed "more than 2,644 academic, research, senior support and general support staff", so they are now experiencing what places like London Met have had to do for at least a decade. Many, many good people have lost jobs. Some have kept jobs when frankly they should not have. The game of academic FTE is really terrible imho.

Petition request, if you can. Kiddo started a Drama degree at #UALCSM in September, and their main teaching space, the Platform Theatre, is at risk. It seems that senior management have decided to get rid of the Theatre space, without notifying the incoming students.
Risky move, of course in #UKHE environment, but maybe wider attention will help them rethink. https://www.change.org/p/save-the-platform-theatre

Does anyone in #UKHE have any tips for reading Aria "opportunity space" briefings? I've read a few and just find them very hard to know how to engage with

I'm not incorporating AI into my teaching because it has nothing to do with my module learning outcomes.

The real risk of generative AI is a crisis of knowledge
Universities are often focusing on new technologies’ impact on assessment, but for Joshua Thorpe there are more fundamental questions about how these tools will affect students’ identities as learners

Using capitalist lingo, the UK university sector is an exporter of education. We sell to the global market. Clamping down on international students is as stupid as limiting who can import our export products.

Education is a human right not a privilege:
https://www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights
https://www.unesco.org/en/right-education...but is higher education similarly a right or merely a privilege? Some interesting reading on the topic here:

Is a degree from a UK university worth it nowadays?
...I'm not sure. It probably depends on what you are expecting from a degree and what that enables you to do. That's subject- and sector-dependent.
Is university education worth it?
I think it is. Education is about getting equipped with the ability to approach problems through processing information and critical thinking.

UK HE may now auto-increase fees in line 'with inflation'. At the same time their 'Digital Transformation' is all out AI with hardly any critical analysis of *why* or *how* or *how much* or *is it any good* measurement. Its mass techpolitik brainrot/ indoctrination. In fact, academic staff lost their jobs a long time ago to edtech and 'learning analytics'. We/they all became data shufflers to build their performance KPI and ROI.

Urgh, what hellish time of day is this? 😬
It can only be #aLevelResultsDay2025, I don’t get up at this time for anyone else.
Stay safe out there, people. May your calls flow and your courses be full! #ukhe

I teach zoology at university and I come across people (not my students but working people) who don’t see the value in zoology.
Firstly I don’t really understand why they’d think that…zoology is the animal side of ecology, so understanding animals is pretty important if you want to protect biodiversity.
Secondly, I’m kind of tired of this expectation that subject experts and teachers are the ones that need to argue against such attacks based either on ignorance or bad faith.

BBC story on a new report from OfS:
"Four in 10 universities face financial challenges”
Talk in the tearoom* was that the situation was worse than this (3/4 in deficit), but it might depend on the definition of University/HEI.
