Of course I'm pleased to see the UK Conservatives get the pasting they so richly deserve.
Let us hope that with expectations being set so low, Starmer can now can now surprise us with some forceful measures on employment law, housing, and taxation of the rich.

Two worries strike me as I see the results come in:

- The presence of Reform in the Commons should be recognised as a threat to democracy in the UK.They are extreme rightwingers who will now have a platform the like of which they have not enjoyed before. Discrediting them will be an important task over the next few years.

- The rejection of the SNP at the polling booth should not be understood as a renunciation of Scottish nationhood. An independence referendum might not be on the agenda for now, but Labour must still think of a way to recognize and accommodate the national aspirations of the Scots.

🧵 1/4 Thoughts on the UK 2024 general election

Of course I hope that Labour wins, and that the Tories lose badly, but I am also hoping to see this brought about by some tactical voting that will bring in some Green MPS and Lib Dems where Labour has no chance.

Aside from those purely tactical considerations , it would be good to have Greens in parliament speaking out from the left of Labour on certain issues and the Lib Dems breaking the silence on the EU.
