  1. Of course I'm pleased to see the UK Conservatives get the pasting they so richly deserve.
Let us hope that with expectations being set so low, Starmer can now can now surprise us with some forceful measures on employment law, housing, and taxation of the rich.

Two worries strike me as I see the results come in:

    - The presence of Reform in the Commons should be recognised as a threat to democracy in the UK.They are extreme rightwingers who will now have a platform the like of which they have not enjoyed before. Discrediting them will be an important task over the next few years.

    - The rejection of the SNP at the polling booth should not be understood as a renunciation of Scottish nationhood. An independence referendum might not be on the agenda for now, but Labour must still think of a way to recognize and accommodate the national aspirations of the Scots.

  12. Just voted. I will always vote , no matter how much the choices may annoy me. I grew up in Apartheid South Africa where 90% of the population couldn't vote. It taught me the value of my little X, how lucky I was to have one, and the responsibility it laid on me. #UKGeneralElection #ukgeneralelection2024

  18. If you are living in Manchester Rusholme there is very little risk of the Tories getting in, with the second most likely candidate is the Green Party
    voteclimate.uk/constituencies/
Therefore if you are a trade unionist don't feel you have to vote labour to get the Tories out but consider fellow RMT comrade Peter Clifford Standing for the Communist League.
The labour party founded as a party of the working class, has purged nearly all of the Left of the party and show active contempt for unions; abondoning commitments to climate and investing in infrastructure.

  21. A long, excoriating piece that lays out, chapter and verse, the destruction that the Conservative Party has rained on the U.K. for near a decade and a half, now that they are finally being booted out, 10 years too late.

A must read and I’d challenge anyone to justify voting for this shower after reading it.

  24. 🧵 1/4 Thoughts on the UK 2024 general election

Of course I hope that Labour wins, and that the Tories lose badly, but I am also hoping to see this brought about by some tactical voting that will bring in some Green MPS and Lib Dems where Labour has no chance.

Aside from those purely tactical considerations , it would be good to have Greens in parliament speaking out from the left of Labour on certain issues and the Lib Dems breaking the silence on the EU.

  26. Yup, our mega-rich disaster of a Prime Minister really is just one of us plebs at heart - he truly understands us! (Ahem…)

At the general election on the 4th of July, we, the British people, need to show Rishi Sunak just how much we really, *really* love him, his designer clothes, and his impossibly perfect white smile, - by making absolutely sure we all vote to kick him and the rest of the Conservative Party right out of government!
