#ThickTrunkTuesday eh? Well, since I'm obsessed with ancient trees at the moment, here's a Sweet Chestnut at Croft Castle, probably planted around 1620–1680

This was my quest for today: the pudleston oaks, known as Adam and Eve. I couldn't seem to take a photo that properly conveyed their ancient gnarled beauty.
They're mentioned in the doomsday book according to one lady i spoke to at the church (so probably 1000 years old), and another lady told me that these days sheep take shelter in their hollow trunks.

Stopped to brew a cup of tea next to a random church in a tiny little hamlet ... AND FOUND THIS 😍🤩😍
From the info board: "Built around 1130, St Mary's [Kempley, Gloucestershire] is an extraordinary survival from the Norman world.
The wall paintings were discovered in 1872 hidden behind layers of whitewash. They are among the most complete 12th-century religious paintings ever found in England and are of international significance."I love my life!

Oh my God, churchyard photos just look so good in #monochrome
This was Linton Church, near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire ... where my friend and I went mainly to see England's oldest Yew tree (of which you can expect photos shortly!)
Such a wonderful day of hunting, exploring, and chance encounters!

The funniest thing at the river yesterday ... the first lamb came down to drink, jumped out of his skin when he saw me on the opposite bank, and ran away.
Moments later, he came back with another lamb, they both came down to drink, and then the second lamb stood sentry on the bank while the first one continued to drink 🐑💖🐑💫

I think the sheep were having a meeting about my swimming activities ... they eventually decided I was alright, and came down to drink from the river!

Honestly, i wasn't even out Well hunting today, but I stumbled across another water feature - a spring-fed drinking fountain.

I present to you the Bronze Age standing stone, known as Queen's Stone.
Excavated in 1926 by Alfred Watkins (of Ley Lines fame), twice as much lies buried beneath the ground.
It sits alone in a huge bend of the River Wye, near Symonds Yat.
And the strangest thing about it? There appears to be no surviving folklore about this remarkable stone 🤷🏼♀️

This is Higgin's Well, restored in 1897.
The folklore goes that the landowner - a certain Mr Higgins - got his comeuppance from the water spirits after trying to block access to the spring on his land, and in repentance built this structure so that people could collect water from the arched well and animals could get water from the lower channel. This was in the 1500s.
