  1. @davidonformosa Also worth noting that #ASPI themselves are facing significant budget cuts in #Australia. 🤦‍♂️️

For now they're probably the most well-informed organization in the world to shine light on China's global influence operations.

The Chinese regime would naturally like to see them disbanded altogether.

  2. 🇨🇦💥🇨🇳☭ 📜 Transnational Crime and Foreign Interference networks in Canada:

「The network of an elite Chinese Mafia suspect with significant industrial assets in British Columbia has been implicated “in recent RCMP investigations of CCP police stations in Canada, and other countries,” according to a sweeping new report from a United States anti-corruption NGO.

The report cites a collection of stunning cases and statistics to argue that transnational criminal networks with ties to China, Iran and Russia are using Canada to launder tens of billions annually, and related economic and political operations are undermining safety and democracy in the West.」

「Canada is currently a hub of illicit trade and crime convergence [and] a weak link within the international financial system for bad actors and threat networks to make illicit profits and launder and hide their dirty money,” the report says.

No longer is profit the sole motivator for these criminals,” it adds. “These threat convergence activities are now being weaponized against rule of law institutions and democratic states for generating more political power, building illicit empires, and financing greater insecurity globally.」

「Operatives affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army, Ministry of State Security, and Ministry of Public Security live in several Canadian cities and liaise locally, and nationally, with Asian Organized Crime networks,” the report says.

China’s political warfare arm, the united front, is believed to be supported, in part, by proceeds from a variety of criminal enterprises and receive guidance and direction through the Chinese Embassy and consulates in Canada.」

  3. ☝️ A very thorough overview of Singapore's position in the 21st century version of the "Great Game" between the USA and democracies on one side and the PRC and its axis of authoritarians on the other.

「Because of Singapore’s majority ethnic Chinese (Han) population, the PRC’s appeals to loyalty, or at least affinity, along ethnic and cultural lines are attractive to some segments of society. Since coming to power, Chinese President Xi Jinping has shown a renewed interest in diaspora nationalism and mobilization, as seen in everything from key policy statements to the more comprehensively subsuming of overseas Chinese affairs under the CCP’s United Front Work Department. Ethnic- and cultural-based mobilization revolves around the idea that people who identify as Chinese should actively support PRC positions, whether these are claims over the South China Sea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Tibet, or opposition to the United States. Accompanying such assertions is the view that resisting an amorphous “Western” threat represented by the United States means standing up for a constructed idea of Asia and the developing world, pitted against a history of colonialism, injustice, and even rapaciousness.」

  4. An informative nitter🧵by the WaPo article's co-author, #ShibaniMahtani:

「When I started conceptualizing my new role as an investigative correspondent, I knew one of the stories I wanted to dig into was how & why extreme pro-Beijing narratives are hardening within parts of multicultural Singapore, my home. Here is what we found:」

「In an ecosystem where people including my friend's parents get forwarded extremely pro-CCP messages that veer on explicit Han chauvinism within this multi-racial society, Zaobao -- a respected, trusted newspaper backed by the state -- can provide a counterweight. It has not.」

  5. ⚠️ The de-facto capture of Singapore would be a huge strategic win for the Chinese Communist Party, and they are making solid progress in realizing that morsel of the CCP's "china dream".

Historically Hong Kong — "CCP's banking colony" — has been CCP's main avenue of economic and foreign trade manipulation, akin to a poker swindler holding two sets of cards. Since the 2019-2020 crushing of #Hongkongers' hopes of ever gaining 'treaty-enshrined' civil or human rights, the manipulative value of HK is on a terminal decline. Capturing Singapore to act as CCP's new banking and business colony would indeed recharge CCP's ability to project power in the region and globally.

Better yet, SG would become a hostile port to the US and other countries in the alliance of democracies if and when the CCP decides to, say, invade #Taiwan.

It has been a long game decades in the making, but CCP's humongous United Front tentacles working to weaponize and 'han-chauvinize' its *subjects* in the large and highly ethnocentric Chinese diaspora are bearing bittersweet fruit.

Oh, and the inner workings of those fancy F35s must be quite fascinating.

“Xi Jinping wants to build influence among ethnic-Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, raising concerns that the Chinese Communist Party is stoking divided loyalties”

  6. CCP *always* had ambitious reach over "its" large "non-resident Chinese" diaspora, mainly through the humongous United Front Work Department, probabaly the most powerful tool and weapon in the regime's arsenal.

The difference is that now, under the glorious guidance of emperor-for-life Jinping the Belligerent, the #CCP is eager to bare its teeth. No more that “hiding strength, biding time” spiel of Chinese #dictatorship's “peaceful rise” narrative.

The question is, will these ludicrous overreaches — like hunting down highly respected pro-democracy activists and politicians with bounties and threats — wake up the sleepwalking democracies. Before it is too late.

  7. ⬆️ 「... a front group for a Chinese propaganda network that’s borrowing tactics from Russia’s infamous 2016 troll farm.

Social media giant Meta announced on Wednesday that it had booted 107 accounts in a China-linked network behind the phony news outlet dubbed the New Europe Observation. The outlet, which Meta researchers say was linked to a Chinese technology company, appeared aimed at trying to stir up unrest in European countries.」

By #RollingStone — "Pro-China Internet Trolls Just Got Busted for Doing Something Wild"

They even set up a business in Londograd like real pros do... Good men!

In 2020 the CCP imposed their "national security law" in #Hongkong, with the sole purpose of protecting the never-elected #dictatorship from people demanding their UN-enshrined civil rights. Incidentally that "law" entitles the CCP to arrest, and imprison *for life*, anyone they deem hostile to their dictatorship — *anywhere in the world*.

Maybe these totally accidental hatemongers running businesses in Europe could be at least invited to explain their rationale behind these hate and anti-democracy campaigns there. The CCP or its UFWD naturally have *nothing* to do with these harmless pranks because they *never* interefere in other countries' internal affairs... (NB: definition of "countries" may vary)

  8. You clearly have significant understanding of the danger the CCP's global project presents to liberal democracies worldwide, even if understanding that may be outside the scope of your organization's focus.

Yes, it is (or was) possible to operate in the fringes of CCP/PRC business and not be a committed sociopath, but anyone productively engaged with China that is harnessed by the CCP is in clear and present danger of being an outright "useful idiot".

For those not cued in: The CCP considers *democracy* an existential threat to its communist-turned-Han-chauvinist empire to be crushed.

Engaging the CCP, i.e providing it with everything it was after, was always a wishful endeavour and a cover for foreign "capitalists' greed" (see: marxism and rope, hanging). The essential industrial supply chains should never have been shipped lock, stock and barrel to a hostile (see: biding time, hiding strength) dictatorship in the first place.

Shockingly, until the Biden administration America's policy towards the "PRC" was based on appeasement, hubris, actual racism under trump and underlying it all, since 1970s, was greed and profiteering.

Getting it all with no concequences emboldened the CCP *and* putin too. All other authoritarians around the world are now aligning behind the notion that by joining hands (hello Axis!) they can not only survive but thrive (their subject peoples are inconsequential to it all).

Shouldn't essential business and supply chains of democracies be located in countries *not* hell-bent on crushing the freedoms and civil rights people fought for generations to enjoy?

  10. Recommended read on Chinese Communist Partys global influence operations. The CCP does *not* want you know learn about this.

Remember the line about "China's peaceful rise" that foreign leaders swallowed along with hook and sinker? Read on...

“Most national security analysts in the United States will tell you that China presents a unique challenge to the U.S.-based order. What U.S. officials refer to as the “scope and scale” of the threat from Beijing outstrips that posed by other Western adversaries, even Russia, these officials say.

Yet the structure of China's intelligence apparatus remains relatively opaque. During the Cold War, the U.S. and its allies developed a granular understanding of the KGB, the Soviet Union’s main civilian intelligence agency, and the GRU, its military counterpart. It’s not that the CIA or the wider U.S. intelligence community had perfect insight into its main rival — far from it. But U.S. officials did have a clear sense of how the KGB functioned.

Not so with China, which remained cut off from the outside world for decades, and whose security services evolved in an isolated ideological hothouse. As China shed its isolationism and emerged as a world power, its intelligence operatives also fanned out across the globe.

But Western intelligence analysts were still looking through a glass, darkly, when it came to Beijing’s espionage abroad. That’s a gap that Alex Joske’s important new book, Spies and Lies: How China's Greatest Covert Operations Fooled the World, tries to fill. Joske, a former analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, traces the evolution of the Ministry of State Security (MSS), China’s premier civilian intelligence agency, focusing on the MSS’s ubiquitous — and largely unknown— role in directing and executing Beijing’s influence operations abroad.”

  12. ☝️ Go and read, that is, unless you deliberately want to remain "blissfully unaware".

「In November 2020 The New York Times reported that a number of companies, including Nike, Coca-Cola, Apple, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Campbell Soup Company, Costco, H&M, Patagonia, Tommy Hilfiger and others, lobbied Congress to water down the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which was aimed at barring US companies from relying on the forced labour of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in China’s Xinjiang region. The companies argued that the ban was too broad and would disrupt the global supply chain.

In September 2019, US billionaire Michael Bloomberg told Firing Line‘s Margaret Hoover that Xi Jinping “is not a dictator” and that he has to “satisfy his constituents”. He also argued that Chinese Communist officials “listen to the public”. Bloomberg’s media company has been criticized in the past for self-censoring in order not to upset the Chinese government.」

  13. CCP: “ 'Beijing' would never require companies to illegally gather data and intelligence from overseas“

Well d'oh. The CCP *is* the 'law' in the PRC dictatorship.

The United Front Work Department's global operations are entirely legal by virtue of them being "by the CCP, for the CCP".

To CCP everything is "legal' and nothing external and foreign from UN Charter and other intl. treaties down is ever actually binding beyond appearances and temporary convenience.

There's a curious compulsion among some and particularly *american* 'techbros' to write everything off as "bipartisan capitalist overreach". But what if it's not *always* them?

  17. Curious.

A "human rights org" demanding rights and freedoms for... tech businesses of the chinese #CCP party-state #dictatorship. 👀

A "human rights org" promoting countless issues around the world, *except nothing* touching #humanrights crimes by #chinese dictatorship, or indeed its autocratic vassals... 👀

The only cuddly references to CCP regime in this feed were about "mutually beneficial #BRI win-wins, of course pandas, and then this:
