  6. At first, I found this aquatic Alternanthera at a clay extraction site near the city of Bragança, coastal Amazon. Due to incorrectly determined material in other herbaria I couldn't figure out the scientific name until I stumbled on a thesis revising the genus for Brazil: It is A. tetramera R.E.Fr. Accidentally, a student here at the #UFPA pointed me to the natural habitat of these rarely collected plants, freshwater marsh-mangrove ecotones.

  10. We spent a couple of days birdwatching at Gunma Ecological Park, a Japanese NGO's nature reserve in Santa Bárbara. This is one of the few well-preserved terrestrial forest fragments in the coastal Amazon region. With help from the guys of Aves do Pará (instagram.com/avesdopara, former students of our UFPA campus in Bragança), we observed beautiful cotingas, toucans, araçaries, trogons, parrots, coquette hummingbirds, among many others.

  11. Myrtaceae in the Amazon region are often difficult to identify to species. This small tree from the dune forests of the Amazon coast is possibly Eugenia protenta McVaugh. Quite important to document these collections in herbaria … If you'd like to have a look, our collection (HBRA) publishes data and photos of herbarium sheets on platforms like SpeciesLink : specieslink.net/search/

  12. From today's canoe trip through the inundated forests of the Caeté river floodplain -- this liana is actually a gymnosperm (should be Gnetum venosum Spruce ex Benth.). We collected this specimen for our herbarium at the University of Pará (UFPA) in Bragança (HBRA).

  13. We planted this tree, Gustavia augusta L. (from the Brazil Nut family, Lecythidaceae) in 2014 on the UFPA Campus in Bragança-PA. Its remained rather small but produces regularly its large, beautiful flowers. The species is still quite common in the coastal Amazon region, mainly in the dwindling remnants of riverine flooded forests. #Amazonas #Lecythidaceae #BragançaPA #UFPA #wetlands #forests #botany #tree

  17. Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl) S.Grose (Bignoniaceae; locally: ipê) is still quite common in the coastal Amazon region, but I don't see many large trees (they provide high-quality timber ...). We planted this specimen in 2013 on the UFPA Campus in Bragança-Pará. Flowering often occurs when the trees are leafless at the end of the dry season, resulting in a quite spectacular view. #ipê #Amazonas #BragançaPA #UFPA #Bignoniaceae #trees #flowers #botany

  21. Currently, the wind-dispersed fruits of Diplotropis purpurea
(Rich.) Amshoff (#Fabaceae) are flying around everywhere around the Instituto Federal do Pará in Bragança-PA -- the #tree occurs in the little patch of #forest on the Institute's Campus. We need some #seedlings for a restoration experiment, so I'm peeling the seeds from the delicate "wings". #BragançaPA #Amazonas #botany #IFPA #UFPA #Leguminosae

  22. We've been bad about keeping #Mastodon up-to-date on #USFL happenings, but here we go.

Last night, we learned that the CBA between the USFL and #UFPA has officially been ratified. The CBA received 100% support from the players.

  27. Curatella americana L. is a small savanna #tree and as such rather unusual in the #Amazonas region. It occurs, however, in seasonally dry #coastal #dune vegetation. Locally, it is the only tree of its family #Dilleniaceae, which is composed mainly of #lianas. It shares with the lianas the spine-toothed #leaf margins (best seen in young plants) and has a rough, sandpaper-like leaf surface. We have a specimen planted on Campus of the #UFPA in #BragançaPA. #botany

  28. These are flowers of Inga pilosula (Rich.) J.F.Macbr (#Fabaceae). We collected the #seeds in 2019 next to the village #Tamatateua (coastal Amazon region) and one of the #saplings we planted on the Campus of the #UFPA in Bragança-PA started flowering this year. #BragançaPA #tree #botany #Amazonas
