  1. I do not understand why they are not "employees".
    They are not independent contractors....
UFCW agreed that they "are somewhere in the middle", and I agree that it is better they have some rep.. .but I am concerned about the model.

  2. Here's some good news for a Monday morning. The Uber drivers in Victoria, BC who unionized last year have signed their first collective agreement.

I guess it was ratified on April 28, but I only read about it today. Hopefully this will lead to improved conditions for Uber drivers all across Canada.

I don't use or support Uber generally, but if I'm ever out in Victoria, I'll make an exception.

    April 17, 2026

On April 12, 2026, members of United Food and Commercial #Workers (#UFCW) Local 7 ratified a new agreement with the JBS Swift beef processing plant in Greeley, #Colorado. A #union press release announcing the vote — with 93% in favor — said the contract contained "all gains, countless improvements, and not a single concession."

"This ... is a testament to the incredible resolve of our members," said Local 7 president Kim Cordova. "These workers stood together on the picket line for three weeks, through extreme weather, because they knew their worth and refused to be disrespected."

  12. #Colorado #Meatpackers End #Strike, Will Return to Work
    world-outlook.com/2026/04/06/c

    from #WorldOutlook
    April 6, 2026

“The company walked away,” Cordova told the crowd of more than 800 #workers from the day shift picket lines. “They believed that you would not walk out on strike.”

But of the 3,800 workers in the plant represented by the #union, 94% did walk on March 16, marking the first major packinghouse strike in 40 years.[1]

The workers’ action had an impact, according to the union. About 60% of the cattle earmarked for JBS went to competitors as the company tried to operate with the remaining hourly workforce and supervisors.

“The problem is the way we are being treated,” Hector Vargas told World-Outlook before the April 3 union meeting at the parking lot. “To keep up with work means taking a beating. And you cannot go to the bathroom. They make you wait a long time — if they let you go.”

  27. Good on the Girl Scouts for honoring the picket line during the area-wide strike at King Soopers.

“These girls are really running their own small businesses, so we are trying to look at this as a learning opportunity. We know that there's frustration, but we're also trying to have troop leaders and parents talk to the girls about what a strike is, the history behind strikes, why people strike.”
