  9. Enable ESM in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to Continue Getting Updates

Time is nearly up on support for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, with standard software, bug fix and security updates coming to an end on May 29, 2025. Users on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS should consider upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (or newer) if possible, but if unable should enable Extended Support Maintenance (ESM) as soon as possible in order to continue receiving critical security patches. ESM for Ubuntu provides “10 years of vulnerability management for critical, high and selected medium [security issues] for all software packages shipped with Ubuntu.” Enabling ESM is a bit of a no-brainer since it’s free for regular :sys_more_orange:

  16. How to Hide Ubuntu Pro Updates in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Ubuntu Pro is an optional security feature that Ubuntu LTS users can enrol in to get critical updates for more than 25,000 packages that would otherwise sit unpatched. If you use Ubuntu 24.04 LTS you will have seen Ubuntu Pro security updates in Software Updater (or when running apt commands). And you will have noticed you can’t install those updates without having an Ubuntu Pro subscription. Businesses, or those with fleets of machines to manage, need to pay for an Ubuntu Pro/ESM plan, but Ubuntu Pro is entirely free for home users (on up to 5 computers) so the only :sys_more_orange:

  18. It is somewhat annoying, to see the disabled security updates in Ubuntu update-manager each time.

On the other hand they are providing a useful service for years and I cannot think of a less ugly idea to motivate users to help finance the thing. Looking at the price: $25/year seems half reasonable actually.

Question: anyone have experience: payment method, cancellation of the subscription, ease of configuring the key or login?

「 Canonical don’t support every package in an Ubuntu LTS release for 5 years. Rather, they support a core of about two thousand packages in the main repository. The remaining 90% of available packages are in the universe repository, and Canonical only support those on a “Best Effort” basis 」

  23. Okay, #Canonical folks: let’s make #UbuntuPro packages manageable for #Uyuni (uyuni-project.org). Currently it only supports conventional DEB repositories and #Ubuntu Pro seems to have a different repository architecture. Does anybody know this is implemented? Can’t find information about this on the internet. Asking for this issue: github.com/uyuni-project/uyuni

    Every idea is welcome!
