  1. Ubuntu 25.10 Won’t Support Running GNOME on Xorg

Last month I reported that GNOME’s plans to drop X11 support as soon as this year would have a major impact on Ubuntu as it plans its next LTS release — today, Ubuntu confirmed as much. Ubuntu 25.10 ‘Questing Quokka’ will not include an X11 Ubuntu desktop session. Only a Wayland session will be provided. It will not be possible to run a GNOME-based desktop on X11 in Ubuntu 25.10. Basically, Ubuntu 25.10 will be Wayland-only for those using the regular1 desktop Ubuntu release. This change: All that’s being dropped is the ability to login to and run a GNOME :sys_more_orange:

  2. Ubuntu 25.10 Switches to Rust-based sudo

Ubuntu 25.10 will replace the sudo command with sudo-rs, a new Rust rewrite designed to improve memory safety and security. What does this mean for users?

  3. Ubuntu 25.10 Will Ship with the Linux 6.17 Kernel

Day-by-day we’re learning more on what to expect in Ubuntu 25.10 ‘Questing Quokka’, the next short-term release of Ubuntu due for release in October. Today, Canonical’s Kleber Souza, member of the Ubuntu Kernel Team, confirmed the plan is to ship the Linux 6.17 kernel in Ubuntu 25.10 – barring any unforeseen upstream hiccups, of course. As we’re yet to see the release of the Linux 6.15 kernel, and 6.16 is yet to enter development, committing to a version so far out may seem a bit optimistic. But it tracks. Last year Canonical made a major change to its kernel cadence :sys_more_orange:

  5. Ubuntu 25.10 Opens for Development

The Questing Quokka is off: development today opened on Ubuntu 25.10, the next short-term release of Ubuntu. Canonical engineer Utkarsh Gupta fired the figurative starting pistol on the Ubuntu mailing list, announcing the opening, and that auto-sync has now been enabled. “As usual, we expect a large influx of builds and autopkgtests in this initial period, which will cause delays. Please help fixing any breakage that occurs,” Gupta adds. It’s only been a couple of weeks since the Ubuntu 25.04 release, but the dedicated devs who spent 6 months diligently shaping that release don’t get much time for a breather. From now :sys_more_orange:
